I'm 22 and athletic and in decent shape. I played hockey and baseball all through high school. I've recently joined a new gym that has large indoor and outdoor lap pools. My city also has year round lap swimming (I live in Phoenix, so the weather is right for it anytime). I figure lap swimming is a great way to stay in shape besides being in the gym itself. Plus I want to start training for a triathlon. I just don't know if I should wear regular board shorts to swim, or if they'll create too much drag while lap swimming. I'm not sure what the best swimwear for a male is for lap swimming and training for a triathlon. I need one that won't drag in the water while I'm swimming. Any advice is appreciated.
IN my experience, a Jammer is good, briefs are ok too, but definitely nothing loose or you will get raw from chafing. As noted above, non-lycra fabric will last a lot longer. Speedo endurance and The Finals endurotech have both shown excellent durability for me. The Speedo endurance has somewhat less stretch and more compression. The Finals is slightly less expensive.
Thanks for the advice so far. Much appreciated. The place I went to seems to sell more swim briefs than jammers. There is more of a choice for swim briefs there. But I will look around further.
Get a jammer. They look kind of like cycling shorts. That is what 90% of the people I see lap swimming wear, and what I wear. You don't want to do any lap swimming in anything loose for two reasons, one is drag and the other is, um......let's just say you don't want things moving around while you are kicking. Don't get a lychra one, they fall apart very quickly. I'd go to a swim or tri shop and try on a few to find one that fits you well.
I used to swim in briefs with a drag suit. Briefs are more comfortable, but given the types of folks in and around the pool at the same time as me, I figure wearing jammers is showing them a courtesy! (and i'm not really kidding)
I've noticed that local culture and current fashion trends dictate popularity of briefs vs jammers. About 90% of males currently wear jammers where I live but briefs used to be popular (back when men's basketball shorts were also skimpier). I've seen recent photos of Michael Phelps in both styles. BTW you will also want to make sure that you do your cycling training in proper bicycle shorts not gym shorts for many of the same reasons related to chafing & drag (as well as padding). At actual triathlon competition most people wear the same garment for all three events. Typically a one or two piece outfit with a bottom that is like bike shorts or jammers but with slight quick drying padding at the crotch.

I can guarantee you Phelps did not train in jammers. Elite swimmers don't wear jammers except for competition. Obviously I'm an advocate for briefs. If you wear jammers you'll look like a 10 year old or an old man. :)
Polyester is definitely the way to go. Those suits last forever!

Look, as it is, I already have a hard enough time batting back all of those bikini models half my age that hang out at the gym where I swim. It'd be flat out impossible if I started wearing briefs.
So I decided to buy two pairs of each for now. I got two Speedo Endurance Jammers and 2 pairs of Speedo / Speedo Endurance swim briefs. I am gonna try both and see which is better for me.
Great idea!
I'm assuming you joined Lifetime Fitness, and probably go to their location in Gilbert. I lived in Arizona for 20 years, with about 15 years in Chandler.
You really should check out Mesa Aquatic Masters:
www.teamunify.com/Home.jsp
Paul and Laura Smith run one of the best (perhaps the best) masters programs in the country. There is a place for everyone, from those just beginning to swim, triathletes, open-water, and even some recent college swimmers still in their prime.
Shoot me a PM if you need any other ideas for swimming in the area. I also ran/cycled at different points so may be able to help there too.
