Does anyone know where I could train in Rome Italy?

Will be visiting Rome in July. Does anyone know if there's a team I could train with for a few days???
  • I visited Rome in February 2012, and it is very difficult to find a Masters team there. I found one not too far from the main train station, but they make you pay close to $20 for the one-hour workout ... and the group wasn't very good. Mostly fitness swimmers who didn't know all the strokes. In the summer, I would imagine the Olympic pool in the north part of town is open, and might have free swim available.
  • Tom, the Holiday Inn on the west side has a full sized pool. No team but lots of room.
  • When I was in Rome a few years ago, I just swam in my hotel pool at the Cavalieri. It was 25m, but didn't have any lane markings or ropes, and was kept a bit toasty. Once in the water and moving around, I usually didn't have any problems with other people, and there was at least 1 seam across the bottom that I used as a lane marking. Given the temp, I certainly didn't wear a cap. I wore my dragsuit the first time and took it off fairly quickly. They have a gym and spa, and I believe let outsiders come and use it...but I'd imagine it is a bit costly. And it is a bit of a hike from town (it is up in the mountains overlooking the city). I found my blog entries from while I was there, and I described the pool a bit... starting with this one: forums.usms.org/entry.php and through 5/31/2011.

I think I'll try the Holiday Inn first and then the Olympic pool later. I want to swim-off all the pasta and wine. Thanks!
  • HI Crowne Plaza Rome: www.ihg.com/.../hoteldetail Eat next door, much cheaper!

An older thread on this topic mentions Centro Sportivo Santa Maria, on Via Boiardo as a good place. Has anyone been there recently, as I too will be in Rome this summer and am looking to keep training...

Has anyone been there recently, as I too will be in Rome this summer and am looking to keep training... That was probably my posting. I'm a member and swim there every fall for 3 months. It's a very decent pool and perhaps a tad cheaper than some of the others. I believe they accept casual visitors at 18 euros a swim (!) Members pay 12 euros for a single swim or a monthly subscription starting at 70 euros for lunchtimes only. There's no doubt about it — swimming in Rome is expensive! Most pools in Rome require you to have a doctor's certificate before they'll let you swim. I had my doc here scrawl out a one-liner on her professional stationary, which I translated with the help of Mr. Google, and that did the trick. Otherwise, you'll pay up to 150 euros to get a certificate there. Also, you'll need a swim cap (mandatory!) BTW, they also have a masters team, but I haven't investigated it as they practice at night, and I like to swim during the day.

This pool hosted the European Championships in 1983, and I believe it is still open: www.polisportiva.it/.../pallanuoto.php
