How do goggles get scratched? They're generally only in contact with water.

I know mine get scratched from the treatment they get when they are not on my head. The pool deck is often concrete and they come into contact with that a bit. It is all accidental but they get some rough treatment from time to time. Even when I have them in my hand when I push up to get out of the pool would scratch them.

How do goggles get scratched? They're generally only in contact with water. the behavior that made you use the word " generally" is the answer to your question. if you ONLY let them touch water, i venture to say you wouldnt get scratches. ;) but you let them touch other things so they get scratched. :)

Kinda like how do glasses get scratched when they're on your face most of the day. Cleaning them even with a special micro-fiber cloth (given to you by the optician) can sometimes leave scratches even when used with water.

I don't know what goggles are made of. There used to be (and sometimes still is) a key difference in the composition of masks, ones made of plastic and ones made of tempered glass. The plastic ones are prone to getting scratched in a multitude of ways but are probably safer around kids. I've had glasses that were likewise poor quality and then had polycarbonate glasses which have always been pretty scratch resistant. They make plastic boxes for dive masks, they'd probably work for goggles too so you don't scratch them up in your bag amongst your things. Also, I've never had my glasses scratch 'just from wearing them.'

I can't stand when my goggles are anything less than clean. They more than likely will not get scratched from your swimming, unless you take them off your head and put them on the deck during kick sets or something. I always put mine in a protective case, sometimes that case is nothing more than the plastic package they were packaged in when I bought them. I will cut air holes in the package so they can breathe in my bag. I won't let them sit in my hot vehicle either during the day, as that breaks down the plastic. I try to never use my thumbs to defog, only my tongue. If you don't want them scratched, then take care of them as you would with eyeglasses. YMMV.

If you have Vanquisher Opticals, never ever ever ever touch them with your fingers to clear fog. Scratch city!
  • I put mine in a small bag I got at the container store made of soft plastic with air holes to let them dry. Cost about $ 3

I keep my vanquisher optical goggles in a case (like this one www.team-aquatic.com/.../index.php ) to prevent them from getting scratched, which is also useful as a safe place to keep my glasses while I'm swimming. It has a little carabiner to hang from a hook inside the locker so I can find it easily once I'm done, too.
