Fina Masters Rules

I've looked on the Fina site but I'm not sure I found the correct answer so I'll ask the resident experts. Do Fina Masters rules allow for "butterfrog?" What about breaststroke kick for backstroke?

What about breaststroke kick for backstroke? Butterfrog is legal for Masters. It is how I swim the 200 Fly and Ginger Pierson has used it to swim WRs.At a SCM meet last year I was in lane 6 and Ginger in lane 7 for the 200 Fly and my wife heard one of the age groupers who was timing say"what event is this." In the USMS rules for fly if you use a BR kick you can only do 1 BR kick before the first pull and only one BR kick in each stroke cycle. You can however use as many dolphin kicks per stroke cycle as you wish.Swimming butterfrog I do one BR kick and one dolphin kick per cycle. In back stroke any stroke is legal as long as you are on your back. Since my back stroke is my slowest stroke and I can swim BR faster than I can swim SDK(sad isn't it) I swim BR on my back underwater off the turns. In a 100 IM or a 50 BK I try to get the full 15M underwater to minimize the time spent actually swimming BK.
  • Thank you Allen. My friend will be very happy with this news! I knew it was legal for USMS, but wasn't sure about Fina events.
  • Thank you Allen. My friend will be very happy with this news! I knew it was legal for USMS, but wasn't sure about Fina events. It is my understanding that FINA is actually slightly looser in the rules in that I don't believe they limit the number of BR kicks/cycle.
  • I am certain for backstroke at least, you can do whatever kick you like as long as you remain on your back.

I was just wondering if this was legal!! I can get much MORE out of my underwaters doing this!! Maybe, I'll try it in a meet!! Just don't want to get DQ'd

  • You mean an underwater pull and BR kick before surfacing, or do you go further and actually swim BR upside down for a couple more strokes? S In a 100 IM on the backstroke leg I do a regular pulldown followed by 5 BR regular strokes underwater on my back before surfacing. If it is faster for you, you could do 2-3 pulldowns instead. I might be faster just swimming BR regular strokes underwater on my back, but since I know my BR is faster than my BK and I do a lot more BR than BK in workouts I figure I should do what I am used to in a a race, except on my back.Given my BK and my BR, if you give me the chance to swim 15M of 25 yd BK as BR I am going to take it.
  • It is my understanding that FINA is actually slightly looser in the rules in that I don't believe they limit the number of BR kicks/cycle.FINA rules are the same as USMS “Only one breaststroke kick is permitted per arm pull...” (MSW 3.10)

Can you legally swim butter frog and *** on your back for the appropriate strokes in an IM?
  • Can you legally swim butter frog and *** on your back for the appropriate strokes in an IM? You can swim butterfrog for fly and BR on your back for BK in the IM in Masters.I swim butterfrog for the fly leg of the 400 IM (on the rare occasions that I swim it) and I have said how I swim BK in IM.
