The preliminary Top 10 listings for the 2011 short-course yards season, which ran 6/1/10 - 5/31/11, are now available. Please check for inaccuracies and email Mary Beth Windrath, the National Swims Administrator, with potential corrections BY JULY 30. You can also email me or send me a PM.
I found the following sequence kind of intriguing (these are based on the 10th times in the men's 40-44 age group, for anyone who doesn't know):
The 500 free seems like an outlier, but I wonder about the general trend of increasing with distance (which seems intuitive) but then decreasing? I might have expected that in relative terms -- delta expressed as a percentage of time -- but absolute terms? Is it just this age-group/gender? (Don't really have time to check others right now but maybe later...)
Maybe distance folk are just tougher than the rest of us.
I think a more interesting analysis would compare the 1st, 3rd and 5th times across ages, sex and distances to see the changes of the suit effect; if I can download the data easily, I might do this next week on vacation. While some events (50-200) the 10th place time is probably still valid, I think the distance times (500+, 400 IM) will show a lot more variance once you get down to 10th place just naturally based upon who swam it that year.
I'm confused. I'm trying to find info about a swim listed in the TT, but when I check that swimmer's list of swims, the swim doesn't show up in the "Meet results" database. Of course this has nothing to do with the fact that he moved me down a spot. I promise.

Pete,
It could be that the swim was done leading off a relay or other split request. I don't believe they show up in the meet results database. Of course I could be wrong.

Please note the disclaimer in bold on the Event Rankings page that states all times are Unofficial. What that means is just because a time is in the database doesn't mean it is eligible for TT. And similarly, all times in TT need not be in the database. Some day in the future in a land far, far away, the database will be official and TT will get pulled directly from the rankings database. But not all meets are automated so as of now the Event Rankings database should be treated as FYI only.
Rich is also correct - not all split requests get uploaded. Those usually have to be handled manually. It is possible to upload them but it requires a few extra steps. Often it takes more work to process a split request than an entire meet - that's why I get grumpy sometimes when the subject comes up. :worms:

RichThanks Rich. I'd seen my own split requests show up in my individual "meet results" query, so that is what confused me. But it sounds like how the time it entered dictates if it shows up or not.

From what I gather you are entering the times that have shown up as "individual swims" rather than a "split request" or something along those lines.
Rich is correct. I think I see what swimmer you are asking about, Speedo, and that 50 free time was done as a lead-off split in the mixed 200 free relay at nationals. Search that swimmer's name in the searchable results from that meet at www.usms.org/.../meetsearch.php and you will see the split in the relay.
We do have a new feature in the meet results database tools where a top 10 recorder uploading a meet can designate any lead-off split as an individual swim now, but this capability was added late in the SCY season this year, so very few split requests are currently in the meet results database. It also currently doesn't let you do a one-click addition of ALL relay lead-off splits in the meet (if observed by the officials as they are at nationals). That's on the to-do list, but until it is ready it is impractical to manually add each of the lead-off splits to the database for a large meet with hundreds of relays like nationals.Yes, that's it. You guys have your hands full with entering results. And since I don't know the ins and outs, I hope this wasn't taken as a WTF question- I just don't know what's linked and what's not and was curious :)

Splits from nationals do not get added to the results database as individual (standalone) events and I am not sure when that would happen. But the bigger problem is that not everyone uploads their meet results.
Even when we get 100% participation, I'm not sure it will ever be an exact match between the two lists ("current rankings" and "top ten") because the results database will, I believe, always have times that are ineligible for inclusion in the TT (eg, from meets conducted in pools that are too short...these can still be sanctioned but the times cannot be submitted for TT consideration). It should be pretty close, though.

You should like the new web tools, then... :)
