I found the following sequence kind of intriguing (these are based on the 10th times in the men's 40-44 age group, for anyone who doesn't know):
The 500 free seems like an outlier, but I wonder about the general trend of increasing with distance (which seems intuitive) but then decreasing? I might have expected that in relative terms -- delta expressed as a percentage of time -- but absolute terms? Is it just this age-group/gender? (Don't really have time to check others right now but maybe later...)
Maybe distance folk are just tougher than the rest of us.
I think a more interesting analysis would compare the 1st, 3rd and 5th times across ages, sex and distances to see the changes of the suit effect; if I can download the data easily, I might do this next week on vacation. While some events (50-200) the 10th place time is probably still valid, I think the distance times (500+, 400 IM) will show a lot more variance once you get down to 10th place just naturally based upon who swam it that year.
