Swimming and Crossfit

I have been a swimmer most of my life. I began to Crossfit 4 years ago and am now looking at incorporating the two workouts. I've been back in the pool now for a month but am questioning whether or not there are swim workouts better suited for Crossfit athletes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  • I would say that it depends on what are you looking from the swimming workout now? Having in mind you are involved with cross fit. If you want to use swimming as conditioning , it's great to start with twice a week 2,500-3,000 since you say you have experience in swimming. You will be transferring the strength from cross fit to the pool which already is like a dry land workout. I think if you look up the basic workouts that are posted on line and the one hour workouts, you will find what fits you best. With the time you will increase your lung capacity and will get used to aerobic regiment which will help you then in the cross fit when you get to that threshold of break down. Hope that helps.

Appreciate you taking the time to add your thoughts. What you said is exactly what I have been doing over the past 5 weeks. My workouts consist of putting together a mix of sets I find online. Most are heavy with kicking using fins, IM work and the use of paddles and a pull buoy. I also spoke with the lady that runs the pool at the "Y" I swim at and she OK'd me bringing in my own weights (dumbbells). I'll start incorporating some of that into my swimming as well. Thanks again!

Since you're in the Phoenix area, you might want to check out crosswim. This combination of crossfit and swimming was started by one of my Swim Devil Masters coaches a few years ago. The main group meets at the Mona Plummer pool in Tempe every evening at 7:00 PM, but there are noon and morning options. I've done a few of these workouts, and they're tough, but good, if you know what I mean. :agree:

Looks like a lot of fun. Funny how I missed this in all of my researching online. Appreciate you taking the time to respond.
