Hi, I just started swimming a couple of months ago and am at the point where I need some workout plans/suggestions. I'm swimming 5 days a week for an hour.
I'm doing beginner's workouts, but am getting bored.
Is there a standard swim fitness test? I'd like to get a good idea of current fitness 'baseline' so I can set some goals and start new workouts.

Part of the U.S. National Park Service Surf Lifeguard pre-employment test is a 600-yard swim (25-yd pool) in under 10-min.
U.S. Navy fitness standards have a timed 500-yd/450-m swim, scoring varies by sex and age. Details for Male age 45-49 (and links for other groups) can be found at
usmilitary.about.com/.../blmale45-49.htmhttp://www.navy-prt.com/ (is easier to navigate to the different standards)
Good grief! They (US Navy) like their women skinny. Maximum weight for 64 inches: 114?
The swim time is quite funny. Pretty slow. But maybe they are leaving out something, like they have to do it in full uniform. I've heard that some schools make their cadets swim 1000 yards in their uniforms. They immediately rip as much as they can before beginning the swim.
So the swim times may be misleading.
I think that 114 is for chicks who are 54 inches tall, which is not so bad. I could weigh 164 (67 inches tall) and I would be quite chunky at that weight. The weight requirements seem generous to me....
Ah, Isobel not very observant! I was thinking, I'm 5' 4" and 114 is too low a weight, especially as a maximum. Ah, no. I am 64 inches tall, not 54, so I too could be nice and plump.
So 4' 6" equals 54? Got it.
I don't think they'd let me in the Navy, based on this sort of error.
Something tells me you need to be more accurate with this sort of thing...
