Hey guys and gals, former collegiate swimmer. Got back into the water about three months ago, have been doing about 2500-3500 a workout every other day or at least twice a week. I have a long course meet this weekend and am about to go to the pool in about an hour to loosen up before we drive to the meet tomorrow. I am trying to put up some decent times obviously and am even thinking of shaving the ole chest and arms to see if it gives me some mental speed. What workouts can you guys recommend to a guy like me with little base, aside from the millions of yards swum in college and highschool, that will get me feeling good in the water for this weekend's swims?
Additionally, I'm thinking of about a thousand to 1500 for a warmup each day. Thoughts?
Glad to hear it was a good meet for you. I would have liked to swim since I was at UNO's last meet a few weeks before Katrina hit. But the meet was scheduled way too close to LC Nats. Maybe we'll meet at a future LA competition. Your son should be inspired. Keep on swimming.
Cool! I just swam my first meet after being out for 8 years. I had only been training for a month. I've been in the water 5 days a week doing 2500 - 3000 yards per workout plus weights 5 times a week. I will be cutting the weights down to 3 days now that my first meet is over. Looking at your screen name, I think we were in the same meet (New Orleans @ U.N.O.). If so, you were pretty damn good.
I am training for Masters SCY Nationals. Hope to see you there.
It was a pretty good experience. I had no idea what to expect. The whole racing thing felt odd and a little rusty since I hadn't done it in 11 years. WOW. I dreamt up some seed times and was pretty close to all of them. After three months of training I pulled out a 25.5 50m free. The 100m free was a different story. i forgot how to go out fast. Brought it home though to win in 58 something. That didn't go quite as planned. I was hoping for a 56. I think that can be achieved easily next time.
I had to warm up about 1200m each day just to start feeling good. i was a little nervous but nothing like the college days. Something I have never felt but felt yesterday was inner joint pain. I mean like a dull throbbing around shoulders and elbows kinda pain, and the backs of my legs felt like stiff leather. Anyone know what to do to prevent that from happening again, or is it just getting old? I drank Cytomax before during and after the meet. I have to say that I felt great the entire meet. I even had to get up after the 100 free and swim two back to back relays. It was all in all a good experience. The meet was small and not very well run IMHO. But it was a re-opened facility that had been down since Katrina so it was the best they could do. It would have been really fun with more people.
I never shaved, just clipped a little and am looking forward to piling on tons of yards and prepping for short course nationals. Should be a blast. I'm doing this for my boy as an example to him. It seems like its really paying off.
Yeah, that was me you beat out in the 100 and everything else for that matter. I have no staying power yet. Guess I just have to train harder. Looking forward to racing you again. See you at Nationals.
