July Open Water Swims in Arizona

Hello all. Believe I am traveling to Arizona (Tuscon area) third week of July (22nd). Am interested in seeing if I can find an open water event to go along with my Cubs game that week. Any help on where to look up swims for area, etc would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  • 6 races this year but no races in July http://www.azopenwater.com/. Last year they had one in August and it nearly killed me. Water temp in July/Aug is around 90 and air temp can be about 114 and racing in it will cause one to die like a pig or at the very least, see visions. State meet http://www.azlmsc.org/ is supposed to be the week before if you want some pool swimming interspersed with sweating like a pig waiting for your next event...Cubs and July open water in AZ?...you really are a glutton for punishment...
  • When you are in Tucson, go to swim at the recently renovated Oro Valley Aquatic Center (explorernews.com/.../article_4bf76a58-8c0c-11e2-a316-001a4bcf887a.html) -- pray they have hours before dawn ... once the sun comes up, you'll want to burrow back into the AC with the shades shut and copious liquids. Where are the Cubs playing in Tucson? I thought the only pro team was the Diamonbacks in Phoenix.

You are absolutely correct. I am basically going down to hang around for the week. Thought I would stay a couple of days in Phoenix, then Tuscon, where some friends live. I have never experienced the dry heat of the desert, so I tend to forget it as a factor. Duh! I will definitely check out the pool mentioned. Thanks again for your replys.

Even though the lakes get hot here in July, it's still worth it to go out. The hottest lake temperature I recorded last summer was 85. When you get out of the water in this dry heat, you feel cold until you dry off. It's fun to shiver when it's 114 degrees out. Canyon Lake, near Apache Junction stays a little cooler than the rest, and it's BEAUTIFUL. You seriously won't believe how beautiful it is. The section of the lake where we swim has a lot of shade. If you decide to go for it, check out the link in my signature for maps. Also, check out this group on Facebook for people to swim with: www.facebook.com/.../
