  • *threadjack (npi) * It may be the fact that I grew up and live on the West Coast and never have heard about the river (though I have been to Pittsburgh), but every time I read this thread title I read "2012 Search for Monogamy," which makes me think it should be a tell-all in the NSR section. *end threadjack*

O lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again! (Etc.) Pittsburgh's epithet (for Second Coasters) is Three Rivers (sumpin), as the site where Allegheny, Monogahela, and A Third One come together, the fluves doing their thing for effluvia. I'm sure I've left out an h or three. At least you don't have to worry about any of those rivers setting themselves on fire (unlike Clevelanders; anybody remember the Cuyahoga spontaneously combusting?). The swag and free food for the event are listed on the Facebook site (how, like, last Tuesday!), linked in the first post. Let the floodgates open and the multitudes crush and trample in their haste to sign up for this season's high-fashion notable event!  :cheerleader: :chug:
  • This swim is coming up fast! Doubt I'll make it this year after all. July is chock full of OW swims! The Allegheny R must meander all over; saw some signs for it (or one of them) near Niagara Falls, ON. Float on down... :) Who is doing this swim? Edit: I just checked the Facebook page. Procrastinators, your day has come! This swim is listed as a top swim for Pennsylvania, on America's Top 50 Open Water Swims: www.americastop50openwaterswims.com/.../state-by-state-open-water-swimming.html Medals for everyone! And an entry in GLOWS. And you can probably get Mermaid's autograph...
  • Wish I could, but getting pretty unlikely now b/c I spent a ton of money in NYC, when I was there for Stars and Stripes Aquathlon. Had lots of fun, so no regrets--but kind of drained my travel budget. But Pittsburgh is where I spent a lot of my growing up years, so I definitely want to get back there for this swim, likely not this year, but hopefully in the next year or two.

It sounds more enticing that way.
  • Can anyone speak to the conditions of the swim? Water temp expected? Besides Monongy-Monogamy, what else might one find in the water? (Anent the recent thread on rattlesnakes, garter snakes, and snapping turtles, oh my!);) :) This is one of the few swims with a "novice" wave, the White Knuckle wave, which allows fins, snorkels, floaties, and other aids. For those who simply want to participate and enjoy the river as a community resource, this is a thoughtful approach.
  • At some point, monsters/mascots became de rigeur for OW swims. Half-submerged shopping carts and stern-faced ppl issuing tickets when swimmers make landfall would add a nice touch of authenticity. So, give Monongy a pat, out of gratitude that no worse will befall. :cheerleader: Go, Monongy!

Can anyone speak to the conditions of the swim? Water temp expected? Besides Monongy-Monogamy, what else might one find in the water? (Anent the recent thread on rattlesnakes, garter snakes, and snapping turtles, oh my!);) I believe water is expected to be in the upper 70's/low 80's. (That's about 27 degrees communist ) As far as the critters you mention? Rattlesnakes, Gartersnakes, and turtles all prefer a more pristine environment. (Although, it's soon enough after prom night an the peak of wedding season, there might be a garter or two floating about.) I've done an online search for the myth of "Monongy" but could find nothing from before the advent of this race. So, I guess that leaves you with monogomy. There are worse fates.(Or so I've heard.) I plan on coming in DFL in this race!
