Gille Potvin was in that race but had been pulled out of the race early. He was on the dock when the plane crashed. He dove in and swam out to the plane and tried to rescue the people. He is also in the swimmers hall of fame as a long distance swim coach year 2006. You will also find my brother Tom Park 1968 and my sister Margaret Park Wisnieski 2000 there also. www.internationalmarathonswimminghalloffame.com/honourees-by-year.html

Population of Roberval was about 11,000, The people would flock to these towns of 10,000 to 20,000 residents to watch the marathon races. I have seen crowds of up to 50,000 at some of these races. The streets were filled with people partying. There were tables, were they would sit eating Pork and beans and sugar pie. There would be 10,000 at Peribonka to watch the start of the Traverse Lac St jean race. Peribonka was a little bush town of about 500 residents. www.city-data.com/.../P-ribonka-Municipalit-.html Robervalle is a bush town.

When was the last time an open water race had any spectators other than family?

Lac St. Jean 32K: Because it's cold and there's nothing like swimming into the harbor at Roberval to 5000+ cheering people. Atlantic City 37K: The toughest race on the planet. The first marathon I finished Tampa Bay 42K: The longest honest race in the U.S. Honorable Mentions: English Channel (don't let politics and other nonsense distract you. Go into it with a definitive plan and stick with it. Don't be swayed into breaking your routine.) Key West 20K: Too hot Lake Travis 20K: Well run. A very tactical course Seal Beach 10 miler: Simple course with nice conditions.
  • has anyone lurking here done any OW in Australia? it's ridiculous that I didn't take up swimming as sport until moving here and haven't done a single event back home! There seem to be quite a lot going on and my nephews swim OW but of course i only seem to get there in summer (Oz winter) so end up doing DIY events I'm also an expat Aussie who took up swimming after leaving Oz, but I'm using OWS events as a good excuse for trips home :) I did the Rottnest Channel swim as a relay last year (rottnestchannelswim.com.au/) which an awesome event - 800 teams, solos and duos make for an incredible flotilla of support boats on the water. The water is clear enough to see the ocean floor for pretty much the whole swim, and with plastic Aussie money you can slip a 50 in your suit and walk straight into the pub for a beer or two after crossing the finish. I'm heading back in May for my first solo distance swim (a 10K) with southheadroughwater.com/ very much looking forward to that.
