your three favorite open water swims... and why?
by all means, feel free to include personal experiences, e.g. your english channel swim, but try to note three race events that we might register for in 2012.
my three to be elaborated on later are;
Donner Lake Swim, Truckee, CA
Highland Lakes Challenge, Austin, TX
Pennock Island Challenge, Ketchikan, AK
Honorable mentions;
Low Country Splash, Charleston, SC
San Francisco Swims
New York City Swims - NYCSwim & CIBBOWS
has anyone lurking here done any OW in Australia? it's ridiculous that I didn't take up swimming as sport until moving here and haven't done a single event back home! There seem to be quite a lot going on and my nephews swim OW but of course i only seem to get there in summer (Oz winter) so end up doing DIY events
I'm also an expat Aussie who took up swimming after leaving Oz, but I'm using OWS events as a good excuse for trips home :)
I did the Rottnest Channel swim as a relay last year (rottnestchannelswim.com.au/) which an awesome event - 800 teams, solos and duos make for an incredible flotilla of support boats on the water. The water is clear enough to see the ocean floor for pretty much the whole swim, and with plastic Aussie money you can slip a 50 in your suit and walk straight into the pub for a beer or two after crossing the finish.
I'm heading back in May for my first solo distance swim (a 10K) with southheadroughwater.com/ very much looking forward to that.
