Population of Roberval was about 11,000, The people would flock to these towns of 10,000 to 20,000 residents to watch the marathon races. I have seen crowds of up to 50,000 at some of these races. The streets were filled with people partying. There were tables, were they would sit eating Pork and beans and sugar pie. There would be 10,000 at Peribonka to watch the start of the Traverse Lac St jean race. Peribonka was a little bush town of about 500 residents. www.city-data.com/.../P-ribonka-Municipalit-.html
Wow, that must have been a fun atmosphere.
I wonder how such enthusiasm can be re-created.
When was the last time an open water race had any spectators other than family?
