Question for Open Water women

Hi there, I feel a bit embarrassed asking this but I have a bad timing issue with a 10-mile race coming up next weekend, unfortunately coinciding with, well, you know. I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with a feminine hygiene issue during a race of this length. I guess I just don't want my protection to, um, give out mid-race. Anyone had this situation? Any suggestions? Thanks.
  • I always thought menstration stopped when you were submerged in the water. If it doesn't I hardly think anyone will notice with all the water, kicking, spashing, and murkiness of a lake/ocean. I'd say don't worry about it. When you finish just get into some black sweats or wrap up in a dark colored towel until you can get to a proper restroom and take care of it. Good Luck!
  • Thankfully, it's fresh water so I am not worried about attracting fish. If only the submersion thing were true! I think I might have to just make sure my family is at the shore with a big towel! Bummer.
  • I can't find any written evidence to back it up but I am positive it stops in the water. Just make sure your family has a dark colored wrap for you and you'll be great! I used to coach track and XC. I had a great runner who wet her pants (big time) after each race she ran. We never made a big deal out of it, I just always made sure someone was at the finish with black sweats for her. She would quickly slip them on at the finish and be done with it. She would change before her next race and we'd just do it again.

This wouldn't be the VT Kingdom swim, would it Sydned? I'll be there too and so will my little visitor! Ok, I don't have any useful advice...just wanted to commiserate!
  • Hi KimRice, Yup. It's the Kingdom Swim. It looks like it's going to be a great event. I'm excited and slightly nervous for the chilly temperatures! Glad someone else will be in the same boat. Perhaps we need a stack of black towels at the swim finish...

I use the pill to change my "schedule" as I don't wanna be bleeding in the ocean. I wouldn't worry about Kingdom swim though cos it's a lake. It's a real pest though. If I'm doing a long swim in the ocean I try to plan a long way ahead. good luck! wish I was there! I'll be in NY.
  • One option for the future is a product called the Diva Cup - http://www.divacup.com/ It's a cup that can be left in place working for several hours. I think it's a great option and have used it successfully, at swim meets when I didn't want to have to get out of a technical suit. Best of luck on your swim. I agree with the Bobinator - have someone there with a towel and you will be fin. --mj
