Smelling Underwater

Okay, being a chef for life has something to do with this. As I swim I am always taking a little water into my nose. I have noticed as I cruise over and through different types of weed beds , bass beds, clear water and near wooded shores I can smell the difference underwater. I also know now that I have allergies to some sea weeds... The other day I could smell the Bass before I reached them... there they were , about five feet down ,just suspended a foot over their dished out beds. Some weed beds smell so strong I want to hold my nose.:fish2: I wonder if we have some electric receptors like pike do that we don't know about.

My sense of smell is also acute, and I also sense very different smells in different OW terrain. I have also smelled fish, but I always thought I was smelling a dead fish in the area. Maybe I am smelling live ones, who knows?
  • I agree about smelling during swimming. I am not a chef, but I had 3 kids so I did cook alot and enjoy flavors. I swim in lots of different pools: Monon Center has a floral-type smell underwater :), Carmel High School is a fish-type scent (lots of fast swimmers there), LA Fitness is just a flat out chlorine smell (spa and small 3 lane pool), Noblesville HS usually smells/tastes like dirty feet, and Forest Park is outdoors so the smell really depends on the weather. All ow smells the same to me. I will start trying to notice if the different types of fish have a different smell quality to them. That should help pass significant time while swimming!

Maybe I am smelling live ones, who knows? if you go fishing and catch a fresh fish , smell it right out of the water, thats the smell....undeniable...you wont mistake it when youswim over a school of fish. Now my son suggested I tie a string with a lure to my ankle and troll as I swim.OMG, a chip off the ol block.

i certainly can smell things in the water. pollen on the surface can wreak havok on my allergies. perfumes and other personal care products can also be annoying. i haven't noticed that different fish smell different.... though anything dead in the water will certainly leave quite the impression. often when swimming at coney island, the water near the pier (where the guys are fishing) has a funky smell/taste.

Wow, cool. I notice different tastes/smells in the water from day to day, but I can't distinguish anything particular. I do find that while I'm swimming, smells on the surface are much more distinct - motor oil, fuel, burgers cooking on the shore; it's like they're right next to me.
  • When my lane mate eats too much garlic for dinner the night before, we all know it at Sunday morning practice. But I'll take that over the water smell of someone's aftershave any day.
  • I thought this was a joke thread. I remember in high school, my friend told a freshman that the bottom of the pool smelled funny. A few moments later, the freshman come back up from the bottom, coughing and hacking.

My suggestion -Don't swim in smelly water. I have swam through the water at the Atlantic city sewage disposal plant. (They told us the plant was closed during the race). I do not believe it, I saw lumps.
