Some open water options:
as already said - the Atlantic Ocean - lots of places for that north and south of Boston
Walden Pond (Concord, MA) very popular fresh water spot not far from Boston
To the North - Stiles Pond (Boxford, MA) tough to find so know directions first
More North - Lake Gardner (Amerbury, MA)
Cape Anne area may have beaches and lakes. craig lewin is the masters / tri coach at north shore swim club and he knows that area really well.

I swim Walden Pond every Thur, Fri, Sat, and Sun. If you come out Friday morning (around 5:30 - 6:30 am) you'll most certainly find someone to swim with. Walden is in Concord, MA just due West of the city.

All along the beach is nice, but pretty cold. But you can swim just off shore for quite a ways

Out of curiosity, what are the summer temps at Walden? I would love to swim there before I die...
lakes around here (southern NH and eatern Mass) now - mid-june are low to mid- 60's now. once you get the initial chill off with a few shake, rattle, rolls and air exchanges, it is really nice. some opt for suits but a wet suit is not needed at all. always wear a swim cap (white or yellow are ideal) that contrasts to the darker water tone so kyaks etc.. see you easier and sooner (for safety). later in the summer lakes typically warm up into 70's but only with extended hot days does it really get warm as in, it is nicer and easier to cruise when it still has a tiny chill in the water if you ask me. got to love open water.

Walden right now is in the low 60's I think. Once it really starts to warm up it'll reach the low 70's. Come on out Eric!

I took the temperature of it last Thursday evening and it was 68. Out in the middle there are definitely cold currents that drop it 4-5 degrees however.
