A friend and I did not get picked in the Chesapeake Bay Swim lottery. We now need a new plan. Can anyone suggest other east coast events that are 3 or more miles in length? thanks
  • Reston's swims are a great option. You can actually swim the 1-mile, 2-mile and 1-mile again at this year's race since it is the 1-mile national championship and they're swimming that race later in the morning.

I'm a Lottery Loser, too. :dunno: I've done the bay for the last 3 years, and I had planned on it being an annual event. Oh well. This is what happens when a sport grows in popularity and some events are unable to scale up to meet increased demaind. Still, though, I'm pretty bummed about the whole thing. I'm considering doing the Jim McDonnell 1 and 2 Mile Lake Swims organized by the Reston Masters (www.restonmasters.org/2miow.html). There is a 1 mile and 2 mile event, and it is possible to sign up for both and swim a total of 3 miles. May 27th in Reston. I also sent an email to the DC Aquatics club for info on the Swim For Life, which has the 1,2,3,4 and 5 mile courses in mid-June, usually the week following the Bay Swim.

Yes, you can do that, if you're nuts! Thats ok, just blow all your energy for the first swims so I can blow right by you later.

I'm leaving on May 16th and won't be back until June 4th. Lots of swimming with other masters teams and hopefully some open water while I'm traveling :) Will be in Honolulu/Austin/San Diego.
  • Attention! Apparently there have been quite a few people who bailed already and they've started allowing in additional people. Check your email!!!
  • Looks like they accepted EVERYONE from the lottery list! That is so awesome! Hopefully there are lots of happy people out there.

anyone keen to swim to the island of shoals? in new hampshire? i will be at rye beach new hamphire the first two wks. in july. other suggestions in the area are cool (lakes, too).:blah:
  • Nine miles is a long swim. And that's some mighty cold water in July.
  • Dave, I'm 53 and started my swimming "career" 9 years ago. So far I have stuck to Rhode Island... I swam in the Med on travel in 2004 and 2006, though. I swim with Fred Bartlett's big group on Sundays at Narragansett Beach, and try to get in a couple of swims a week at 2nd beach in Newport after they stop charging. (415PM) The rougher the water the more I like it. I prefer not to wear a wetsuit. I have done the Misquamicut open water race (a little shallow and brackish), and the leading leg of the FIRMman tri at Narragansett, and was at the inaugural 1 mile turnaround swim at Narrow River this year. I swim with some guys who have done Mashpee. We do a couple of 1.9 milers, from 1st to 2nd beach around easton's point, in the early morning. Swam one in the fog this year and had to hug the coast. Five of us stayed right together. I swim into November each year; those are strange and wonderful swims. (I use a neoprene cap and booties as well as a farmer john wetsuit once we're into the cold stuff). Cold water is dangerous without support, so we put someone on the beach who stays even with us, plus I never swim alone. I sold a drawing this past year for enough money to do save the bay, so I will finally enter that race this year. (The entry fee has always held me back, and I don't like asking people for money.... even when they always ask me if I "do" save the bay. Besides, they might give me a hard time about how slow I am..) Thanks for askin....
