I'm starting this thread as a way for people to check if there is going to be an open water swim at second beach in Middletown RI, any given day. We do these swims from June 15 to November 15, usually on Tues and Thurs. We also sometimes do an early morning swim on the weekend, from 1st beach to 2nd beach, around Easton's Point, about 1.9 miles. Starting in June I'll be posting the plans and the reports. I usually send out emails, but this won't require an email list, and anyone who is interested will be able to check. Who knows, maybe others who swim at 2nd beach and have access will chime in and organize their own swim dates using the forum!
Aloha
Mike.
First first to second beach swim featured 9 swimmers and lots of red seaweed. Weekday swims now feel like summer. We're doing well. eamil mikegarr@usms.org if you want to join in.
Cheers
We had a few swims this past week, some fog, some waves, decent participation.
Weekday swims are not as well represented as they might be due to our bizarre weather this summer.
530 Wednesday was washed out on account of fog, and Wednesday 430 was marginal. The small shrimp seem to be quite reduced, and now the small jellies are blooming in spots. But hey, that's what the ocean is all about! It keeps changing. This morning we had 11 swimmers for the around the point swim; four newbies: Liz, John. Paul from NY and Diane. We buddied them up and had a good time. Plenty of wind out of the south made for more challenging conditions than usual. water was about as warm as it gets; just about everyone had wetsuits today nonetheless.
Good luck to the Save the Bay swimmers this coming weekend. Hope you meet your goals.
As usual email the list if you want to swim either at 430 or 530 any day this week.
If anyone else is not doing Save the Bay and wants to join me for a free swim of the same distance around the point Sunday morning, let me know.
Cheers,
Mike G.
Happy New year everyone.
I haven't posted in a while to this thread, but that's okay...
Looking forward to another great season swimming in the open ocean at the Sachuest Beach. We started last year May 15 and ended October 1. If you want to get into the open water in Rhode Island (on the Island) email me and I'll put you on our email list, so you'll know when we're going. MikeGarr@usms.org
Good luck to everyone trying a Polar Bear Plunge today...
Non-wetsuits rule!

After the big floods we have also had unseasonably warm weather, and the Bay temperature has hit 54F. This is unheard of. May be we will begin the open water early this year. Be looking for the go sign! If we start swimming at Sachuest in April, it will be a first....that's for sure.
Happy Spring....
When do the Second Beach swims start up? I'm looking to join onto the group, especially since I am looking to compete in Save the Bay and perhaps the Narrow River. Let me know, I'm especially interested in the weekend 1.9 miler.
Thanks!
After my initial optimism in April water temps in the area have been up and down. We are still waiting for that first good day, but the tentative first scheduled swim is next Tuesday May 25 at 430PM. We now have a facebook group that you can check out as well. www.facebook.com/group.php
Looking forward to a great season. You can email me at mikegarr@usms.org if you want a personal reply.
We got in our first swim last week Tuesday with good sized rollers and a pleasant enough water temperature of 65F. Felt wonderful! The ocean is "open for business" in RI. Send an email to MikeGarr@usms.org if you want to get involved in this season's training/fun swims in the ocean at second beach, Middletown, RI.
We are planning swims at both 430 and 530 today. Meet at the lifeguard chair in front of the main bath house, second beach. There is no charge after 4PM for parking.
We haven't had any warming this week. I'd recommend wetsuits still. I am on the cusp as to whether I will try it in the jammer. Anyway, come and enjoy!
Swim fast, seek peace.
This summer has been great for ocean swimming at Sachuest in RI. Lots of participation, great weather, water temps mostly in the mid 70s and some really memorable swimming.
We enjoyed a first to second beach swim yesterday with 10 participatants, and most went into the Purgatory Chasm at the end of the swim, a local 8 ft wide cleft in the rocks with 8 ft water depth, and a very small gravel beach at the end.

You can check out our most recent swim around the point on Facebook, thanks to Jon Cooper's waterproof camera. This summer has been super in RI, with lots of participation and great weather. Keep swimming and keep enjoying, into October, if possible!
