Sachuest Beach Open Water Swims

I'm starting this thread as a way for people to check if there is going to be an open water swim at second beach in Middletown RI, any given day. We do these swims from June 15 to November 15, usually on Tues and Thurs. We also sometimes do an early morning swim on the weekend, from 1st beach to 2nd beach, around Easton's Point, about 1.9 miles. Starting in June I'll be posting the plans and the reports. I usually send out emails, but this won't require an email list, and anyone who is interested will be able to check. Who knows, maybe others who swim at 2nd beach and have access will chime in and organize their own swim dates using the forum! Aloha Mike.

Wow, small world. I would like to recommend the First to Second Beach swim. 1. A very competant and safe group of swimmers, they kept one person within ten meters of me the entire time. 2. Conditions were great, but hey, it's open water. 3. Logistics of auto shuttling were well managed. 4. Finish beach is a great place to hang out when you are done. And if you like this swim, let me tell you about St Croix... Ken
  • Good idea Mike. I've registered and standing by for swimming notifications. Dan Force :applaud:
  • Here's an aerial shot of the 1st to second beach swim waters, around Easton's point. (True open ocean!)

Met you at the SENCYs swim meet and was glad that you mentioned that you would be posting information on organized swimming out of Sachuest Beach. Will not be able to swim during the week, but weekends are a possiblity. What dates/times do you do the swim? Thanks in advance.

Hi Dan, Fancy seeing you on this thread. I'm looking for advice for doing Pensacola next month. I just posted but no advice yet. What do you think I should do? Oh yeah, we'll back in RI in June. Jim
  • Did my first ocean swim last Tuesday, in Southern Florida. Sure was nice, but in Ft. Lauderdale they are strict about staying 50 yards from shore, so it didn't quite feel like the more offshore Sachuest swims! (Alot warmer too.)
  • Since people have mentioned wanting to do more weekend swims, I am thinking about doing an early morning regular swim at second beach every week, meeting at 645AM. If that works for anyone, let me know. MikeGarr@usms.org
  • Let me ask you guys and girls a question. What would you say is the best way to simulate swimming for times when you can’t get in the water (for whatever reason)? For example, in the gym today I used the lat-pulldown machine with very light weight (30 lbs) and made sure I got a good pull from well above my head all the way down to my thigh. I did 50 reps per minute for five minutes. Would that equal 400-500 meters? What I’m wondering is, is there some formula based on body weight that I could use for determine how many reps/weight I’d have to do for it to equal swimming a particular distance? My ultimate goal is…with triathlon season around the corner…is to be able to do short, training transition ‘triathlons’ in the gym by using the lat machine to “swim”, the stationary bike, and the treadmill. But I want to simulate accurately with known distances/effort. The bike and run aren’t a problem with the stationary bike and treadmill. I need suggestions, ideas regarding the swim. Dan

i don't have an exact answer for this question. my triathlon coach and swim coach use cables for this exercise. they both recommend very light weight so i just use the one plate attached to the cable. i also don't do very many. maybe 3 x 10 on each side. the idea being to identify any differences in right/left stroke and potential areas to strengthen. i'd be interested to hear other's thoughts. mary
  • Hi everyone. This is just a tester for sending out swimming reports from our second beach swims. If you want to be on the email list let me know by return email. I will be deleting you from the list if I don't here from you before the season begins.... You can check the Sachuest beach ocean swim situation by subscribing to the USMS web site service using the following URL: forums.usms.org/showthread.php I'll be posting there as well once the season begins. (like I am right now...) If you put the site as one of your "favorites," you'll be able to check on the swimming activities without checking your email. Off to Italy to swim in the Med this week. Ciao (mikegarr@usms.org)
