Sachuest Beach Open Water Swims

I'm starting this thread as a way for people to check if there is going to be an open water swim at second beach in Middletown RI, any given day. We do these swims from June 15 to November 15, usually on Tues and Thurs. We also sometimes do an early morning swim on the weekend, from 1st beach to 2nd beach, around Easton's Point, about 1.9 miles. Starting in June I'll be posting the plans and the reports. I usually send out emails, but this won't require an email list, and anyone who is interested will be able to check. Who knows, maybe others who swim at 2nd beach and have access will chime in and organize their own swim dates using the forum! Aloha Mike.
  • As the year comes to a close, thanks to all who have joined us at the Sachuest beach for swims, whether part of the email list, the facebook group, or out of towners who have come to Newport RI and located us through this discussion forum or elsewhere. Every year is different, and every day different, in the open water. Sachuest is a special place to swim, but even more, the folks who make it a habit, and have come to be a part of the fellowship of the open water there, have enriched my life beyond measure. There have now been regular swims by different groups all year long. Our official season began on May 25 (two swimmers) and ended on November 7th. Pictures from both these swims are posted on the facebook page. In between, we had as many as 18 swimmers or more on the weekend swims around the point, and as many as 13 on the weekday swims. On any given weekday during the season, there may be folks swimming at 730AM, 430PM, 5PM, and 530PM. There are also rogue swimmers who go alone. We do this for fun and adventure, and the serious triathletes tend to do their own thing separate from us. Newbies are welcome. Try to get started during one of our afternoon weekday swims. No matter what, you will not be left alone during your first ocean swim. Join the facebook group or email me to become part of the email list. Feel free to contact me with questions. mikegarr@usms.org Our mantra (originally from Doug Immel, my boys' swim coach): SWIM FAST SEEK PEACE Facebook group page link: www.facebook.com/home.php
  • I've been plotting the temperatures at Newport from the Naval Station National Ocean Service monitoring site, for the last 6 years. We are now in the warmup phase. The water temps change on a pretty regular basis, and they follow the same curve yearly as the sun's height at 41N, but lag by 53 days. The average Temperature at Newport year round is 55F. If you can stand 55F you get a six month open water season: May 13 - November 13. 2007 was the warmest Ocean temps in the last 6 years at Newport. 100 days and counting.
  • You are awesome Jim...
  • Good news! We've had the best ever start to our season. Bill R got in early in May on a good weekend day. Last week we swam Tuesday-Friday around 430 each day with Friday having 8 participants. Today and tomorrow we will have 4PM swims. Newport, RI visitors, if you want an early season ocean swim second beach is the place. I've already had a 50+ minute swim without wetsuit. (and Ellen A was similarly attired.) Water temps have been variable, 58-66F. Doable. If you want to join in, we have a facebook page, Sachuest Ocean Swimmers, and you can email me. mikegarr@usms.org. Swim Fast Seek Peace! Mike G
