Sachuest Beach Open Water Swims

I'm starting this thread as a way for people to check if there is going to be an open water swim at second beach in Middletown RI, any given day. We do these swims from June 15 to November 15, usually on Tues and Thurs. We also sometimes do an early morning swim on the weekend, from 1st beach to 2nd beach, around Easton's Point, about 1.9 miles. Starting in June I'll be posting the plans and the reports. I usually send out emails, but this won't require an email list, and anyone who is interested will be able to check. Who knows, maybe others who swim at 2nd beach and have access will chime in and organize their own swim dates using the forum! Aloha Mike.
  • six swimmers today. Clear atmosphere windy ocean, great fun. No problem doing the buoys. We welcomed Onne and Jim (newbies) to our swim. Nice to meet ya. I'm getting some pressure to switch our regular swims from Tues Thurs to Wed Fri. Let me know if that would work ok (or better) for everyone.
  • positive response about wednesday friday rather than tues thurs for our regular swims. Therefore: second beach swims this week to come (until i change my mind again): Wed Fri 420PM main lifeguard chair. aloha

Hi Mike. I'm newcomer to the forum and a resident of Middletown. Are your 2nd beach swims open to anyone? I work in Providence and probably couldn't be back for Weds, but I'd be interested in Friday. Also, if anyone goes out on weekday mornings or weekends, that'd be great.
  • I came for the first Wednesday swim today. Can you believe it? A few showers, and nobody shows.... The weather broke as I arrived. It looked SO inviting, light breeze, small swell, great visibility.... The "beach" was "closed", but the ocean was inviting. I'm not there to sunbathe anyway, am I? Where's everybody else's optimism? I tried to cajole a complete stranger (Steve, who was hanging on the beach with some friends) into joining me for a swim, but he told me he would slow me down too much. Letting me down gently, I suppose... Yet... who really let me down I ask myself. Either I'm nuts, dedicated, or as Norm puts it TOO OPTIMISTIC ALL THE TIME. Friday is the day before "save the bay," and I will be there. again. Last chance to practice in the open water. My plan is to groove my stroke and to work on sighting and straightening. I will use it as a warm-up for "da Bay."
  • There has been a fair bit of interest but not alot of participation. I want to give more people a chance to swim second beach with us. Here's the plan: 1. This coming week (and indefinitely if it works out)we will meet later than we have in the past. This has seemed an issue. 445PM meet, 5PM start. 2. We will swim every day Tuesday-Friday. 3. So everyone will know there is going to be a swim on a given day, anyone who plans to swim should post a message on the discussion forum during the week like this: "I'm in Today" or "I'm in Tuesday" If you say you're in, just show up! This way people will know on a given day there will be people showing up, and who's going to be there, .... Anyone who did Save the Bay and who has swum with us at second beach knows that our training was perfect for the rough conditions that were at the Bay swim this year. So join us and get properly trained! Nice to see everybody at the "big event" yesterday. Way to go Kelly, Lori, Barrett, Dan, Ann, Judy, Aileene, Lee, Jim, Matt, Martin.... Swim fast seek peace.
  • I'm in Tues (tomorrow)
  • Tues July 24 report Two is a quorum for the buddy system, but Nine swimmers were in attendance at the main lifeguard chair, right on time... Looks like the new(sy) schedule is starting to work some magic. Lively waves, warm temps, good company. Jim P and Bill C are vowing to improve their navigation.... Barrett, Tara, Kelly, Jim, Bill, Onne, Dan, Paul, and the undersigned, all wandering about in the Ocean today. The newbies are talking about increasing the distance. We'll see how they feel tomorrow after the exhilaration wears off. I'm sticking to the usual plan, and I'M IN tomorrow, meet at 445PM start swimmin 5PM The more the merrier. email the list if you're in. Swim fast seek peace. Mike.

Unless something comes up, and I'll let you know if it does, it looks like I'm in for Thursday. It will be really close to 5:00 by the time I get there, so if it hits the go time, start swimming. I'll just try to swim really fast to catch up!

  • Four swimmers and the rogue man Jim P today. Great conditions, great company. Bill Geasey and Martin H teamed up. I got to swim with Barrett, which was a good matchup for me... I am out tomorrow unless I happen to make it... If not see you all next week. There is already a quorum for Friday, so enjoy. 445PM meet 5PM get in the water.
