Sachuest Beach Open Water Swims

I'm starting this thread as a way for people to check if there is going to be an open water swim at second beach in Middletown RI, any given day. We do these swims from June 15 to November 15, usually on Tues and Thurs. We also sometimes do an early morning swim on the weekend, from 1st beach to 2nd beach, around Easton's Point, about 1.9 miles. Starting in June I'll be posting the plans and the reports. I usually send out emails, but this won't require an email list, and anyone who is interested will be able to check. Who knows, maybe others who swim at 2nd beach and have access will chime in and organize their own swim dates using the forum! Aloha Mike.
  • Hi everyone. Fred Bartlett swam in Barber's pond last Friday and says the RI season is now open. He will be swimming Barber's again Wednesday at 515PM. Join in if you want. No wetsuit needed. Bill Comeau and I swam in the lovely Mediterranean last Monday, and it was perfetto. I think this week will see a good warmup at our fav spot, so next Tuesday for Sachuest, 430PM. I'll check the buoys and the weather between now and then and give a predicted ocean temp for yall. Swim fast seek peace
  • The NOAA buoys are hovering just below 60F so we will be cold, but I still want to give it a try on Tuesday afternoon at the second beach bath house/pavilion. Bring your swimming wetsuit. (420 PM). I'm expecting 63F water temps. Then if you want to swim without a wetsuit in open water in Rhode Island go to Fred Bartlett's Barber pond swim on Wednesday at 515PM. I did it with Fred last Wednesday, and it was a great cool temperature, perfect for swimming. Just need a pair of googles and cap (and a suit of course). The swim is about a mile. Would be great training for the Narrow River turnaround swim.
  • First training swim of the season completed. Brian and I stayed in the shallows in water just about at the temp I thought it would be. Definitely tolerable with a wetsuit. Scenery beautiful as ever. Sachuest Beach is open for open water swims. Thurs 430PM next one. If you call me we'll wait up for you! 401 741-7193. Cheers,
  • Hope Mark Enjoyed yesterday's Barber Pond... I'll bet it was good. I couldn't make it. Sachuest was at it's fine shape today. Brian and I did without wetsuits. Temp was about 68F I'M NOT KIDDING. Really. No wetsuits. no problem. Kelly Kittel joined us a little late. What a pleasant surprise to have a green capped wetsuit person join us midway through the swim... Tuesday probably a good chance that it will be great too. Call or write. Great to see Ms Kittel again
  • Hey guys and gals ... I'm back from my "Mediterranean adventure." I'll be there for the regular Sachuest swim tomorrow. Thanks to Brian G. for filling in while I was gone. See you there.... Ciao
  • Hi Mike, it looks like I will be in Newport with my boyfriend's family on July 27-29. I'm training for an 8-miler in August, so I need to get at least one swim in there that weekend. Does your group do any weekend swims at Sachuest Beach? We have a bunch of folks in the group who want to do early morning swims at Sachuest, although it's tough for me. We also do two or three first to second beach swims every year. Those are always meeting at 7AM at Sachuest then splitting cars and driving over to first. That's a 1.9 miler, but no safety support, just buddying up. I'll pass your request over to my email list, and see if they get back. I know Dan Force would like to do some weekend swims, also Ann Walsh and Bill Geasey.... So we'll see what develops. keep checking the forum. Ciao
  • Yesterday Sachuest was in true summer form. :groovy:big sea breeze wind waves and water temps in the upper 70s. Still missing the Eastern buoy. Brian,Norm,BillG and I had a blast. I may be late for tomorrow because of a VTC at work that's scheduled from 1430-1630. I will show up even if I am late, maybe for a round 2, who knows? I may have Brian with me... I'd suggest showing up at 430 and then I'll try to hit the beach by 445 at the latest. President Bush is in town, so traffic will definitely be a mess. Head to the beach as far from Newport as possible..... See you all then.

  • Tomorrow will mark yet another glorious opportunity for getting wet. 420PM at the main bathhouse/main lifeguard chair area. Norm T and I went in the big waves on Thursday and were tumbled about. The usual buoy to buoy swim wasn't even a possibility. When it's big, it's tough, bottom line. Bill Geasey and I encountered the weekend parking problem at second beach on Saturday. The maintenance crew kicked me out! We met instead at surfer's end, walked east to the edge of the swimming area (first lifeguard chair) and had a pleasant but chilly swim beyond the breakers, to the main white buoy and back. Nice and clear. A disadvantage is you are not parked close to the showers, so for me it's a long salty drive home. Bring your own fresh water rinse if you decide to come for an early morning swim on a Saturday. I am definitely looking at the weekend of July 28-29 for our first 1st to second beach event of the year. I am leaning towards Sunday the 29th. Good luck to everybody who is doing Save the Bay July 21st. Hope to see you all there. Ciao
  • I checked the forecast: It looks like things are setting up to be perfect for tomorrow's second beach swim. If you were hesitant or made excuses before, tomorrow would be the day to sample the best the beach has to offer. 420PM meet, 430 swim. Main lifeguard chair.
