We do it all winter, swimming that is, in Oakland, outside, in the dark at 6 AM, or 6:30 PM. 80º in the water, somewhere between 25º and 60º on deck. In downpours and hail storms, but we do get out for lightning (winter is thunderstorm time in the SF Bay area, but only rarely), and bathroom breaks.
My favorite thing to do in the water when it's really raining is to put on my fins and kick on my back under water to watch those little raindrops rip through the surface, it's so cool.
See Ya
Brian
PS if your in Oakland this winter look us up!

I love swimming in the rain, though I've only done it once in open water. And that was Tenaya Lake on a cold summer evening.
Over the years, I have often swum in the rain. When I was a child age grouper, it seemed really unpleasant and unfair that we had to swim when it was raining. After all, we got wet on the deck. OK, it didn't make much sense.
By the time I reached law school at UCLA, and was swimming at the Men's Gym, rainy days were wonderful because the pool wasn't crowded. The same is true about Masters--there is a shared camaraderie of being in the water together and feeling like you are stealing a workout--no one worries about how fast they are going, and there is a lot of complaining for fun, and not complaining for fun.
As for open water, last year(2004) I did the St. Croix Coral Reef swim. As we were waiting for the race to start, there was a light tropical rain which was colder than the ocean water so we all got in the water to stay warm. Neat experience.

Love the rain...often the water is warmer during rain than mere non-sunny days...I feel that rain immerses you in swimming. It's kind of neat when the water/air division is blurred with rain or mist or fog.
BTW, I feel the same about playing soccer or running in the rain!
Of course, to put things in perspective. I live on what was originally called "The Rain Coast".

I miss the summer. I like swimming in the rain. It seems surel some how. I hate winter.
Summer please come fast. I need to swim out in the sun so I don't look like casper.
Oh, and I am starting to like long course.

Don't mean to gloat here but....
swam and it was 70 and sunny today here, I even got a little tan! I usually swim at 5:30 AM in the 40 degree temp so it was a nice change. Even got to swim long course as we have the pool set that way for Christmas training (is it politically incorrect to call it that now?). Anyway, I feel for you guys in the north dealing with the weather, but as Jimmy Buffet puts it so eloquently:
"The weather is here I wish you were beautiful."

Somehow I don't expect to hear anyone raving about how wonderful it is to coach in the rain...

How about just plain raving after coaching in the rain? It does provide a certain feeling of accomplishment, coaching in the rain!

I used to love it when it rained during practice. My coach hated standing around in the rain, so the practices usually consisted of longer intervals.
