Over the years, I have often swum in the rain. When I was a child age grouper, it seemed really unpleasant and unfair that we had to swim when it was raining. After all, we got wet on the deck. OK, it didn't make much sense.
By the time I reached law school at UCLA, and was swimming at the Men's Gym, rainy days were wonderful because the pool wasn't crowded. The same is true about Masters--there is a shared camaraderie of being in the water together and feeling like you are stealing a workout--no one worries about how fast they are going, and there is a lot of complaining for fun, and not complaining for fun.
As for open water, last year(2004) I did the St. Croix Coral Reef swim. As we were waiting for the race to start, there was a light tropical rain which was colder than the ocean water so we all got in the water to stay warm. Neat experience.
