Feed stick

Does anyone have any clever ideas for the design of a feed stick for longer races? I've used a small aluminum pot on the end of a broomhandle in the past, but it's a bit short/small and not great if the water is rough. Also, ideally I'll have my bottle(s) attached by string to the stick so I can drink from them and then drop them, but what to do about things like pills (e.g. seasickness pills)? Any other thoughts appreciated. -LBJ

If I'm training in a pool, I will stop every 1/2 hour for a few seconds and gulp down 12 oz of Accelerade or similar. In open water workouts (rare, since there are very few places around here where one can swim open water without getting arrested), I either: 1) do without (3 miles w/o nourishment is no great hardship at this point and I've done up to 10k races without anything) 2) drink 12-18 oz of Accelerade before swimming and then do without 3) keep a PowerGel packet under my cap if needed. 4) if you can beg a kayaker to accompany you, have him/her carry some supplies. -LBJ

OK- thanks. I'm fortunate enough to live 1/2 mile from a beach, so I've been trying to get out there as much as possible, in addition to my pool workouts. i felt like a wimp asking, actually, but with the heat index hovering in the high 90s, I thought that I should definately stay hydrated and wanted the opinions of the OW pantheon of gods and goddesses ;) Having said that, I make sure that I've drunk enough watered-down gatorade before I jump in the sea, but I just wanted to make sure that I was doin' the 'right' thing.
