Does anyone have any clever ideas for the design of a feed stick for longer races? I've used a small aluminum pot on the end of a broomhandle in the past, but it's a bit short/small and not great if the water is rough.
Also, ideally I'll have my bottle(s) attached by string to the stick so I can drink from them and then drop them, but what to do about things like pills (e.g. seasickness pills)?
Any other thoughts appreciated.

I've read this thread three times now and I still don't know what a feed stick is. Please enlighten me.
Feed stick, how the boat handler feeds you a stick to reach you, also a plastic tube that I used to drink out of looked like freezies. Squeeze and the product comes out. Others may have better explantions. This is what I used or the boat guys just handed me a cup of my mixture.
Oh yeah! Thanks for asking!
You know, I think that motion sickness I had last Sunday was the start of a stomach flu, because it lasted a week, and a lot of people I know have the same symptoms...
So, moral of the story, I've been down for a week, and didn't do the swim (it wasn't a race, just a swim) yesterday.
Next race will be a 2KM on July 3rd. I'll definitely let you know how it goes! I'm going to take those ginger capsules in any case!!
Cheers,
Mary

Happy 4th of July everybody!
I did a 2KM race in Lerici (that's near the beautiful Cinque Terre) yesterday. I loaded up on ginger capsules on Saturday eve and Sunday morning before I left. Got to Lerici and... the sea was beautiful, flat, and WARM! 27 celsius = 80 fahrenheit!
So, I guess it wasn't much of a test for the motion sickness prevention. I was almost disappointed!
It was a lovely swim, out of the port pretty much a straight line siting a castle on the hill of San Terenzo, around a breakwater and back again, siting Italian cypruses on the hill, and then a series of white tents where the race committee was set up. I did it in 38 minutes, coming in second in my age category (44-49). Afterwards we were served sandwiches, drinks and limoncello! A good time was had by all...
Hey George! I'll bet Canadians take their ginger with a drop of maple syrup!! ;)
ciao!
Here's a pic of the Golfo dei Poeti - the Gulf of Poets. It's called that because Byron, and Shelley lived there. Byron used to swim across the gulf for fun and exersize, and now there is a race every year called the Coppa Byron, or Byron Cup. This year it will be on August 27th and will be 10KM.
Wow- I'm real impressed by all of you distance swimmers- it's something that I'd like to get into.
Havings said that, what about nutrition- specifically water- on shorter training swims, like 1.5-3.0 miles? How does on handle that?
