Pretty wild! I am wishing her the best of luck...but I'm not getting my hopes up.
I think a sprinter would have a better chance with a "late-life" comeback...it's not easy to recover from the type of workouts a distance swimmer needs to go all out in a 400 or 800 m race. Considering she didn't medal in the 96 games, it would seem that perhaps he time has come and gone (and, it was some really amazing times she had!).
That being said, perhaps she was just to burned out in 96 to make the effort needed. I'm anxious to here how the Fullerton meet goes down this weekend...pretty certain she will win her age group!
Gosh, whoever is going to that meet is lucky! I wonder if she gets discount on entry fees since the pool and meet are named after her?? Well, she is the first distance swimmer making a comeback after a long hiatus. Sprinters are able to come back with very little problems(ie Dara Torres). It will be interesting to see how her comeback plays out.

Agreed.
This "comeback bandwagon" thing is getting old too (no pun intended).:cane:
I'm being told that she went a 4:23 this morning.
OK, I was a little over optimistic. I'll still stick with my prediction of 4:10ish by the end of the summer if she tapers.
First off, this is way cool.
I totally agree with Woofus about her 800 and 1500 performances of the past. Of all the records that went down in the tech suit era, I was most sad to see her 800 go down.
Now, as for this ...
I'm being told that she went a 4:23 this morning. A new National Masters record for sure, haven't checked for a WR.
... I used to think I was 'safe' from being 'chicked' by Masters women roughly near my age in the distance races, but I'll definitely have to start training even harder now.
I'll go with Kirk on the 4:10ish prediction as soon as she rests for a meet. I can't imagine she's rested.

EDIT: Both a Masters WR and NR. Previously held by KPN, at 4:26.17, back in 1997.
Oh joy, next year she'll be in my age group. There goes any chance of taking the #1 spot in my events. hee-hee.
I think her comeback will be fun to watch.
