So by scratching the 200 free Phelps also gave up his 4x200 relay spot? Or does the field of possible swimmers now grow to eight?
NO
anyone on the olympic team is eligible for relays
Phelps did not swim the 100 fr semis or finals in 2008 and
he swam on the 4 x 1 free relay finals at Bejing in 08
Now Ervin could also be considered for the 4 x 100 free relay
It's great for USA to have strong possibilities
"It also pulls Ricky Berens, the third-place finisher in the 200 free, into individual-event duty. Additionally, seventh-place finisher Davis Tarwater officially moved up to sixth place with the scratch, making him the newest Team USA Olympian."
Was on deck when the news came down . I stopped the practice and announced to a chorus of cheers for Tarwater and Berens, who grew up at SwimMAC. I think this move makes our Olympic Team even stronger.

I get that. But earlier in one of these threads someone made the argument that having eight people to choose from in one of the relays was problematic (men's 4x100 free relay, I think). For the 4x200 it sounds like they now also have eight.

It does, Phelps swims the 4 x 100 fr finals fresh, instead of doing the 2 free semi then getting right back up for the relay, Berens & Lochte probably won't swim the 4 x 100 free finals but Beren's will swim the prelims and Lochte might too. This is likely to enhance phelps split by several 10ths & Tarwater who's a friend from Michigan gets to be an Olympian.

What else should we include on this page?

U.S. Olympic Trials:
Michael Phelps Pulls Out of 200 Free in London;
Focusing on 400 Free Relay
-- July 2, 2012
This USA Swimming Article PHELPS SCRATCHES FROM OLYMPIC 200 FREE casts a little doubt to whether Tarwater will be added to USA's 2012 OT or not
"A decision has not been reached yet on whether or not Davis Tarwater, who finished 7th in the 200 free at Trials, will be added to the Olympic roster."
2012 Olympic Games Athlete Selection Procedures
"A decision has not been reached yet on whether or not Davis Tarwater, who finished 7th in the 200 free at Trials, will be added to the Olympic roster."It would be great if Tarwater was placed on the team. But it seems like the best option is for Vanderkaay, Dwyer, McLean and Houchin in the 4X200 prelims. Then Lochte, Phelps, Berens and 1 from prelims in finals. Which leaves Tarwater high and dry.
There is still 1 of the 12 relay only spots available and the Men’s team is going to be under the 26 person max, so there is room and hope.
FYI, Ande, I think that USA Swimming article URL you posted must have had some info regarding your login. When I tried to view it I got a pop-up alerting me that my freebies were done. This being July 2nd, and me not being a regular visitor to the USA Swimming site, it's highly unlikely that I exceeded my limit. Starting from their home page I was able to find the article easily enough.
Katie Ledecky 8:19.78 (US trials)
Rebecca Adlington 8:18.54 (GB trials)
My money is on Ledecky for gold in London. She's 15 years old and full of confidence.
Unfortunately Rebecca Adlington is busy fighting personal demons, British comedians and Twitter trolls.
