  • I'm going to double-post and I don't care... CULLEN JONES MAKES THE TEAM IN THE 100 FREE!!! :bliss::ohyeah:  :cheerleader: :applaud: WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!! Hmmm...I wonder who's gonna make the Olympic Team tonight in the 100 Free? Maybe someone from USMS might be able to. Well, we'll see in the next hour (on west coast) after it's televised on tv...
  • I don’t know how they are going to manage the men’s 4x100 free relay. Lochte scratched the finals but I think he deserves a spot on the relay even though he didn’t put up an amazing time tonight. He’s not fully rested and will be a lot better in London. He split a 47.9 at Pan Pacs in 2010. He has improved since then and I think he’s good for a 47.5 split in London. But the problem with adding him to the relay is that makes him the 8th man because Phelps is guaranteed a spot plus the other 6 qualifiers from the 100 free trials finals. In Beijing, there were 7 swimmers which work out nicely. Weber-Gale and Lezak, which were the top two at trials, and Phelps were guaranteed spots in the finals. The other 4 swam the prelims and whoever swam the best split earned a spot in the finals. It was a very fair process. With 8 people you are setting up for some tough decisions. You pretty much have to predetermine which 4 are going to swim finals and which 4 swim prelims. What if someone has a great split in the prelims? Do you kick someone out of the final and deny them a medal or just stick with the original lineup even though it’s not the fastest possible. It works so much better with 6 or 7 people. But they can’t just tell 1 of the top 6 in the 100 to stay home because whoever qualifies 6th will probably only be qualified in just the 100 free. Probably Lochte will not swim the 4 x 100 free relay at the Olympics. But he might. The coaches will make that decision in London. USA's head Olympic coach is Gregg Troy Lochte's coach. USA has the talent and depth to swim the slowest 4 in the morning and the fastest 4 at night. The big risks are: if someone has an awesome morning swim he might bump the slowest of the 4from the night or If someone has a terrible morning swim, it would suck if USA didn't make top 8. (which is very unlikely) The morning crews instructions will be: SAFE STARTS (be 0.25 to 0.4 on exchanges) Swim fast have fun and get us in finals. The coaches will make solid choices based on: how swimmers trained during camp, practice times during taper (who they feel is on or off) and if anyone is sick or injured The mens relay is Sunday July 29th We will find out real soon. (schedule)

I think Troy is in a tough spot with Lochte. Ryan did not post a great time yesterday in semis. I think the only way Troy can put Lochte on the relay is if he has an incredible 400 IM swim, and even that seems kind of dubious to me. A fast 400 IM doesn't mean a fast 100 free. With the 400 free relay at the beginning of the schedule the coaches don't really have time t o evaluate who's hot and who's not.
  • Do you think they might make Lochte swim a time trial during camp or in London?

Yay Cullen! I've seen a little criticism that his 'Make a Splash' work seems to be cutting into his training time, but clearly not the case in recent months. I think the men's 200 BR tonight screwed up a lot of folks' picks for the SwimSwam.com contest.

One other note: it just occured to me that Dagny Knutson missed the Trials this year, apparently due to a health issue. Ever since she deferred at Auburn, she's had a ridiculous run of bad luck.

Anyone recognize the guy sitting behind lane 4 (for finals)? He looks familiar, possibly because I have seen him at the USAS convention for years. That's John Leonard of ASCA.

Phelps is on the relay based on past performances. He isn’t putting out great times right now either, yet he is automatically going to be in the relay final. Lochte has been 47.9 and is better now. I think he can go 47.5-47.8. If our worst split is faster than that then we might actually have a shot against Australia. I think Lochte is top 4 but who knows, he might not be. With 8 guys there is no room to prove it in the prelims because someone would have to get kicked out of the final which isn't fair because they wouldn't have had a shot to prove themselves with a prelim swim.

Prelims: Ervin 21.83!!! Awesome swim for him. Phelps and McGill both sub 52 in the 100 fly. Franklin, Pelton, Beisel all sub 2:10 in heats of the 2 back. 14 year old Becca Mann made yet another final in the 800, she's now finaled in the 400 free, 400 IM, 200 fly and 800 free. Amazing meet for her, never heard of her before this meet. Zeigler and Ledecky qualify 1-2, Sutton lurking back there. I just did a quick calc: average age of the final in the 800: 18.5. Lots of young talent.
