200 fly vs 400 IM

Many moons ago - maybe 7 or 8 years, my teammates and myself would discuss which is harder - the 200 fly or 400IM. I always thought the 400IM would be worse as it involves backstroke which drains me and then I would have to stay with the plot on 100 ***, and I'm not a breaststroker by any stretch of the imagination. 200 fly on the other hand, well its all fly and 200 less than the 400IM and once you've got your rhythm you're set ..... so what do you all think?

Done both a few times. No question that the 200 fly, esp. LCM, is the scariest of the two because if you take it out too hard you literally cannot do the stroke. I spent over 50 seconds (and several lifetimes) swimming the last 50 meters of fly in Cleveland at a nationals a few years ago (I heard a guy yell "world record" at the turn and by the end of that length I felt like world "disaster"). It took me 3 years to dare to try it again. The IM, whether 200 or 400 actually tire me out more because I can swim it almost all-out and still keep swimming. Your body can be awash in lactic acid and feel like a lead weight but you can at least swim *** stroke or freestyle....not fly. That's the difference. To avoid disaster I have paced my 200 fly very carefully since that awful swim and have found that I have too much left at the end, but the fatigue comes with such a quick drop I have had to respect it and pace carefully. Worst fatigue came in a 400 IM in Indy nationals. Took it out in a 57.00...yep. I had to be helped to stand up after that one.....

200 fly is way harder... The last 50 of my last 200 fly...was....:cane: When I swim the 400 IM, every time I change the stroke is like recovery happens, I'm really bad at fly so I always finish the first 100 dying and in the last position, then I build...

Have never raced either. Both are unswimmable.

Why didn't anyone tell me the 200 fly LC was harder then yards? I just signed up a few days ago for it. :censor:
  • 200 *** of any flavor of distance is harder than this; provided you loaf the walls, glide far and aim to even/negative split. :lmao: Anybody who thinks 200 *** is in anyway an easy race or is not painful is not really swimming it hard enough. At the end of a 200 fly, my arms feel like falling off. But after a 200 ***, my lungs feel like they're going to explode.

But after a 200 ***, my lungs feel like they're going to explode. Exactly!!! :agree: I guess that's why I'm crazy enough to keep at this event, rather than just wimping out with the 50 and 100 breaststroke. I'm determined to face the challenge head on and make this my best event! :D
  • 2 fly is my best event and 4 im is my second best. but i am only a good 4 im'er because the 100 fly at the beginning doesn't make me tired at all and i'm decent at the other strokes. i'd say the 400 im is tougher because it takes me a lot longer to recover afterwards. also, because of the distance, i think it requires more training to be able to do effectively.

THAT GUY IS GOING TO SHOW US SOME BREASTSTROKE. HERE HE IS! TAKE YOUR MARK, GO! ... OK, YOU SEE THAT EVERYBODY? YOU SEE WHAT HE'S DOING THERE? NOW DIVE IN AND DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE! Yes, I will certainly admit to not knowing how to swim the 200 *** properly. But I've swum it twice this year (once SCY, once LCM) and it's just not even close to the 200 fly in any course. As others have already noted, there is never a time when DNF is a legitimate possibility in the 200 ***.
  • As others have already noted, there is never a time when DNF is a legitimate possibility in the 200 ***. Well, that's just not true. I am so slow and any 200 BR I do would take so long, that I might quit the race out of sheer boredom. I feel pretty much the same way about race-walking: sure, it's tiring. Awfully slow too, and funny-looking. :worms: (Honestly, half of the reason for this post is that I wanted to use the new smiley.)
  • (Honestly, half of the reason for this post is that I wanted to use the new smiley.) hey our shipment of noodles finally came in!! :worms::worms::worms::worms::worms::worms: PARTY TIME!!!
