Many moons ago - maybe 7 or 8 years, my teammates and myself would discuss which is harder - the 200 fly or 400IM.
I always thought the 400IM would be worse as it involves backstroke which drains me and then I would have to stay with the plot on 100 ***, and I'm not a breaststroker by any stretch of the imagination.
200 fly on the other hand, well its all fly and 200 less than the 400IM and once you've got your rhythm you're set ..... so what do you all think?

Both! :afraid:
I'll stick with my 200 breaststroke which is hard enough! :afraid:
These are my best two events. I've done them many times each. The 200 fly is the tougher event, no question. 200 LCM fly stands alone among the USMS events. Now if we added the 800 IM, 400 fly, and 800 fly like the Australian Masters do... hmm... :worms:
In order of difficulty from most to least:
200 fly LCM -- no sane person should swim this
400 IM LCM -- not bad after you get through the breaststroke
400 IM SCY/SCM -- generally, a pretty fun race and the walls make it almost exponentially easier than #2
200 fly SCY/SCM -- I actually think this is not too bad and I'm not a natural butterflier. 200 *** of any flavor of distance is harder than this; provided you loaf the walls, glide far and aim to even/negative split.
So having survived two 200 fly LCM, one while 6 weeks pregnant, and a few 200 fly SCM in the past a 400 IM should be easy with a bit of training?Absolutely. The 400 IM also has a dead-easy race strategy -- build each 100, taking care to not build the fly too much, grab a lot of air on the walls and have fun.
I will never ever attempt a 200 ***. Ever.
I'm determined to make 200 breaststroke my best event! :bouncing: Right now, my 50 and 100 are ranked higher than my 200. The times at my first LCM meet placed me in the "AA" category on the Motivational Times Chart, for both the 50 and 100 breaststroke. But, I'm an "A" in the 200. At least I moved out of the "B" category!
Swimming the 200 LCM breaststroke reminded me of a watch my husband received as a gag gift. It was a Bart Simpson watch, and when you pushed the button, it quickly repeated the phrase, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?? Are we there yet???" As I was swimming my last lap, I must have asked that to myself on every pull! But, when I finally reached the wall, it was a PB, so I was happy! :bliss:
I've done them both in meets. I still do the 400 IM so that tells you which one I think is easier and more survivable.
Hey, we have a new smiley :worms:
