I was on two relays at USMS SCY Nationals that broke national records. I just received an email from Walt Reid asking me to send him a copy of my birth certificate and/or my passport to verify my age; which I understand having to verify the age. Before I send copies of my personal information I wanted to confirm that this is legit. I emailed him asking a couple questions but have not heard back.
Let me know...
Thanks!
if it's from the real walt reid it's legit
a friend broke NR in Austin
walt contacted him
my buddy emailed me to confirm it wasn't an identity theft scam
some swims have not been recognized as NRs because a swimmer or relay member failed to turn in his doc
forms have to be filed for WRs with in 60 days

Legit.
Be lucky your records were set at nationals. If you did them at a local meet (not a regional meet), you tend to get sick with worry, because sometimes officials have never dealt with verifying record swims.
Congrats!
I find it interesting that you do all the paperwork after the meet.
over here we the meet director takes a photocopy of the swimmers passports, all the forms for records are filled in, and signed by the meet director and head timer (person incharge of the timing system).
the only delay is getting the full meet results printed and signed as well.

So all of the swimmers bring their passports with them to the meet?
At our meets, I do all of the paperwork after the meet, get it signed, and submit it with the backup paperwork. We then notify the swimmers who don't have age verification on file. (With 1000 swimmers in a meet, I have no idea who is already on file.)

No not all swimmers, just those that have a chance to break records.
our nationals is more like your states in terms of number of swimmers. so those that swim and really train for racing know their chances and come prepared.
but I don't think your passport is needed for national records since our age is verified through your license to compete. but some form of valid id is required, otherwise how do you know the person swimming is the person entered to swim?
But NR, ER and WR I am 99% positive that those swimmers had to leave proof of age at the meet.
image me signing up to race nationals, only handful of members here know what i look like, so i could send my brother or a friend to swim, then wait 40-50 days and then mail in my proof of age and you'd never know if the mailed in proof was for the person who swam or the person who raced ;)
But this is the case with all swim meets. Even if you prove your identity at the door on the way in... it's not like anyone is checking photo IDs as people step onto the blocks. There is a fundamental level of trust going on.
