  • I'm watching it live now (my team mate is in event 12 so I'm tuning in early) and so far out of 9 heats of Mens 100 back 3 DQs - 2 for being fully submerged at the finish and 1 for violating the 15 feet rule. Ack. The times are great, though. And I did get to see a team mate I don't know swim in heat 4 :) Make that 4 DQs - another for staying under too long. I wish I had their lungs.
  • My team mate just swam. I was cheering the whole way. He did great. Of course anyone who finishes the 200 fly deserves kudos. I'm going to miss Nick. He's heading off to college. He's been a great inspiration for this more "senior" member of the team. Someone just got DQd for a "non-compliant swim suit"
  • Just for perspective Lochte wore LZR legs in 2008 and 2009. (You can tell that as a kid Lochte was the one who was jumping off the roof into the pool for the excitement of it.). I do agree that Hoff's problem was mental. I think she could not mentally handle her schedule. I also heard second hand that this is why she left her former coach. Lochte added some Strongman routines to his dryland when he got back from his knee surgery. He marches to a difficult drummer. He is great to watch in meets. Hoff cut her schedule and hopefully the mental stuff for good. Gosh, Fullerton must be magicial place or something! Who is going to win tonight's 100 Back? I will go with Nick Thoman.
  • So, Phelps made finals in the 200 free by just 0.6 seconds. Do y'all think he really knows within a few tenths how fast he is swimming, or did he get a little lucky? I always had to go all out in prelims to make finals (or consoles, or neither), so I don't know how those guys can game the system like that, no matter how much better they are than the rest of the field..... Peirsol has been gaming the system for years and got served last year in the 100 Back at Rome! Phelps might have to learn the hard way one of these days. I think that Katie Hoff kind of did that in the 200 free. I say "kind" very lighty to her since she was in no place to fully game the system.

I think barely making A-final was chance (he did the same thing at the Charlotte Ultraswim).
  • A big congrats to Kevin "Kip" Darmody in the 100 back. He's a USMS member's son and a rising high school senior here in Charlotte. In addition to being an incredible swimmer he is one of the nicest kids you'll ever meet.
  • It's got to feel weird being Michael Phelps rolling into a swim meet like this. The guy is a 25 year old multi-millionaire, up against a field of primarily college guys 3-4 years younger then him hoping to make a name for themselves. The fact that he is still putting in the time and effort to train for another Olympic run is impressive in and of itself.

How is this really different from any other pro sport, where the greatest players make millions upon millions more than the rookies?
  • glad, I wasn't the only one who noticed that. You certainly weren't. I could't beleive it when he kept doing it over and over...
  • Day 2 – Wednesday, August 4 08 W 100 Backstroke ... 10 M 100 Backstroke ... Both 100 backs are stacked. It is going to be fun to watch.
