Wearing a tech suit at Nationals?

I graduated college in 1999, just before tech suits took over the world. I have never worn anything other than an old school Speedo (and a wetsuit for open water.) A friend of mine has pretty much convinced me to try it out at Nationals this weekend since it is my first and last chance. He gave me his suit to wear, so it's free. Any thoughts? Are most of you wearing tech suits, or going old school? Thanks!

I'll be wearing a B70 Nero Comp. I'm from the old school of swimming....tech was a papersuit in the early 90's. So Nationals will only be my third meet wearing a fullbody tech suit. Its the end of another era.

I've seen elites(high caliber) elites with worse turns and stroke mechanics than what's in the video. Wookster*, I haven't, at least not at that age.
  • trust me, bill is trying to do everything in his power to get faster- and he's doing a damn good job of it this year. i just don't appreciate smart cracks about my teammates, especially when you don't even know them... No matter what you say Mollie... I still hope I meet Bill in a warm-up lane. As a coach recommending a video to watch, I had to say something about the less than perfect technique. This is actually pretty rare for GoSwim.tv but Glenn obviously had a good message to send to the masters and I appreciate that part of the clip. But regardless, swimmers do watch this sort of technique and come back asking questions. Believe me, when I swim in lanes next to my own swimmers they have plenty to critique on my strokes! Full apologies to Bill if I hurt his feelings. But again, I hope to meet him in a warm-up lane. Ahelee
  • Go for it with the tech suit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are fun!
  • As a swimming purist I chose not to sully the sport by wearing illegal suits.
  • Marc, I will be easy to spot for the video analysis; I'll be in my funky purple and white Speedo Endurance TRAINING suit with the flower pattern! (Hate the pattern; loved the cheap Swim Outlet sales price!). I'm not fast enough to even go there with a tech suit. :cane: I may get laughed at with my purple and white suit, but I would be laughing at myself HARDER if I showed up to a meet with a tech suit, given my current swimming status! :laugh2:
  • Not all tech suits are illegal. I believe that was partly his point, George... To the OP: you certainly won't feel out of place in a tech suit at nationals, if that's what you are getting at. I predict the majority of people will be wearing body suits. So if you have free access to one and it fits snugly (ie, it won't take on water), go for it.

I'd rather watch that video, even if his form isn't perfect...hey, who is though, than read about tom whinning one more time about suits, scys and pool clarity. thanks john. I would like to thank all the elements that eventually led to this fabulous comment from thewookiee!

But, after Nationals, start fresh and put those nationals times into a lockbox and don't reference them for future times. Some Olympic-caliber swimmers are having issues gauging where they are with their times without the cheating suits. That is my :2cents:

If nothing else, you will be able to have some insight on the question when the issue comes up again in a couple of years and USA swimming and FINA long for the days when swimming and the "suits" were front page news. One thing - try it out before this weekend. You have a different feel in the water, especially in breaststroke.
