I am going this year. Its been awhile since I have been to a Nats. Plan on driving down from Ohio, about an 8hr drive.
Not sure on events yet but definitely 100,200 fly, 500 free. Then probably the 1650, 200 free and 100 free.
Or you can book the Birmingham flight, cram everything in a carry-on and just sneak off in Atlanta. I'd check a decoy bag through though; as I believe the fine polyester clad TSA folks find people traveling without checked luggage to be highly suspect and are likely to detain you for a lengthy strip search or worse.
I wouldn't do it. If you don't show up for your connection the airline could cancel your return flight.
I doubt TSA is suspicious of people traveling without checked bags. With the airlines charging for checked bags people are avoiding checking bags like the plague. I'll bet you on a typical domestic flight far greater than 50% of the passengers don't check a bag.
for those staying aways from the pool, plz be forewarned traffic is a bear in the atl. allow a lot of time if you are swimming in the am.
Don't take this admonition lightly. Ga Tech lies in the heart of where traffic is truly nightmarish. Traffic will be fine on the weekend but Thurs and Friday it will be hell.
There are some preconceived notions against MARTA but I never had any issue with it and found it very effective for getting to the mid/down town area, especially if coming from the North side of ATL.
found a killer hotel deal for 2010 SCY Nats
go to Hot Wire . com
Put in Atlanta, GA & the dates you need for the meet
Select the 3 star Buckhead Hotel for around $45 a night, Recommended in 95% of customer reviews,
if you want a room with 2 beds, put in 2 adults 2 kids
it's a great brand, 5 miles from the pool, non smoking and complimentary breakfast
Bet it will sell out soon, see you there!
You're welcome!
What hotel is it, Ande?
I found a good site: hotelguides.com then type in Atlanta. I was more specific and typed in Georgia Tech.
There are at least 50 hotels within 5 miles of the pool. I discounted the 2-stars which cut my list by 10.
I will go to hotwire now that I have a better of idea what the hotels are and how far they are from the pool. Thanks Ande.
I think I'll pay a little more to be closer to the pool. I'd be a little more than upset if I missed warm ups or a race b/c of traffic!
If your family is coming, there's a very nice Embassy Suits at Olympic Park right beside the Aquarium. It's a short drive to the pool or a cheap cab ride. It's probably not inexpensive but kids seem to dig the Embassy Suites.
We are going solo on this one :agree: Well sorta. Pat's parents are flying down from CT to hang out with us. They came to Ft. Lauderdale too.
I'm kinda bummed b/c it looks like there's a lot of family activities to do: aquarium, MLK sites, Olympic stuff, etc. Pat would absolutely have a cow if we bring the kids. He likes to focus solely on swimming at Natls, and kids are a pretty significant distraction. (I do fine with them there.) Plus our cost would go from about $1000 for both of us, to about $2,500.
It's expensive to take 6 of us anywhere. Although I have my sites set on World Champs in Italy in 2012. I've started a little slush fund. I figure I need to save at least $5000. For some reason Italy is loads cheaper than Sweden, at least looking at flights right now. I'd love for my kids to go to Europe. The older 3 will remember it, Finn, not so much (he'll be 4). I think we'll have some significant things paid off by then: car, police dog, and a credit card, so that will help my case to go!
