My sympathies are with the swimmers who trained hard (often for years) and abided with the rules allowing tech suits, resulting in a world record swim. To delete their records would be to diminish the effort they put forth.
My sympathies are also with the swimmers who trained hard (often for years) and abided with the rules, prior to the advent of tech suits, resulting in a world record swim that was erased by someone in a tech suit. To dismiss their records (which has already occurred) diminishes the effort they put forth.
Both records (i.e., records with tech suits and those without) should stand together until a world record time without a tech suit surpasses the world record time with a tech suit. It will happen, possibly within the coming decade.

Their records haven't been dismissed. Records are suppose to be broken. We may not remember their exact times but they will be addressed as "former world record holder"
I can't tell you want Adolph Kiefer, Johnny W., John Naber, Murray Stephens times were when they set the records, but the history books will show at somepoint they held a world record in their respective events.
There should be one set of records.
Does anyone know what Track and Field did with the javelin records when they changed the javelins so they didn't fly as far?

What to do with the REAL WORLD RECORDS?
start over, go back as far as necessary to records that were set by swimmers wearing suits that would be legal according to current rules
"What to do with Masters records?"
Nothing, there's plenty of younger faster swimmers who are capable of breaking records set by swimmers who wore tech suits

The current world records are the REAL WORLD RECORDS. That is so much bulls#!$ to say that they aren't. The records were established under the rules governing the sport at that time.
Is there any other sport that has gone back in time to change their record books just because the current rulers don't like how the records were established?
The records should stay. Legally set. Legally swam. Legal competitions. Legal drug testing that was passed.
What a crock to want to set our sport back in time.
An olympian friend of mine said in the late 80's world class Javelin throwers were starting to throw the javelins out of the field so the track & field ruling body required javelins to shift the counter balance weight more toward the nose causing them to dive sooner & not fly as far
So, as swimmers it is incumbent upon us after we regress the sport to the 70s to also follow the lead of people who throw sticks. What's next, letting the International Tree Climbing Federation dictate our sporting rules? Only FINA could come up with something that stupid, right along with allowing speed suits until June for fear of sun spots and jelly fish attacks.
In my sad eulogy to the fun suit era I ordered a flippin' Aquablade jammer today. Woo hoo, that's progress, 80s style.

So I guess all that's left is to wait for the river of tears to run dry. Apparently that is going to take awhile longer. :)
