Split Time: What To Do With the World Records,
Part Two: Craig Lord and Garrett McCaffrey Offer Thoughts
January 13, 2010
So I guess all that's left is to wait for the river of tears to run dry. Apparently that is going to take awhile longer. :)
River? What's bigger than a river? There's a run on Kleenex in S.E. Charlotte this weekend.
At least they didn't start DQing javalin throwers because they threw them too far. But someone could have gotten speared.
Suits, although I couldn't even understand what you folks have to go through, at least it would be interesting to see what events, distances, and styles were at an advantage with the suits by comparing last years records to 2010 records. It's only one year older for the swimmer so the accuracy is there, and I think it could be usefull data to see specific areas where the suits helped and didn't help. Hopefully styles didn't change in accordance to the suits too much. Best of luck, but I'm sure ya'll will kickass without the suits too.
Why stop with letting USA Track and Field dictate rules on swimming records, let's follow their stellar lead in drug testing and enforcement. Maybe Marion Jones and Ben Johnson could be president and vice president of FINA.
Fine, if we're going to be totally absurd, let Track and Field dictate swimming's rules. But then we'd better be allowed 3 people per event at the Olympics too... :bitching:
The records should stand.
"Modifications that manufacturers made to recover some of the lost distance, by increasing tail drag (using holes, rough paint or dimples), were outlawed at the end of 1991 and marks made using implements with such modifications removed from the record books. Seppo Räty had achieved a world record of 96.96 meters in 1991 with such a design, but this record was nullified."
I don't really care what they do with the swimming WRs. Breaking them lost almost all meaning in the past two years. I suppose I have a slight preference for doing nothing (ie letting them stand).
I think the perspectives of the current elites should be the most important one to heed. I believe -- but am not certain -- that they have a financial incentive to break WRs so I am sympathetic if they want to reverse course.
Then again, presumably people made out pretty well over the last two years. I doubt anyone returned any money because they were wearing a faster suit than the previous WR-holder.
