2009 USMS Long Course National Championships

2009 USMS Long Course National Championships Indianapolis, IN Thu Aug 6th - Sun Aug 9 RESULTS Psych Sheets
  • I talked to several swimmers who felt relay day hurt their Sun performances.Swimming all the distances was a good idea and I don't have a better one,but if swimming 4 relays, especially if one was a 800 is a killer.
  • Is there ever going to be a Nationals line up that has the 50 Free on the FIRST day? Puh-leeze?
  • Is there ever going to be a Nationals line up that has the 50 Free on the FIRST day? Puh-leeze? Hey Paul, FIRST day (in theory) is distance day, dude. According to the meet rules, 104.5.2, SC Nat's in 2011 will have 50 free on the second day, which is first day for you until you start swimming an 800lc, 1500lc, 1000sc, or 1650sc :). They must have made a lineup adjustment that moved the 50 due to relay day and distance day at the end at Indy that changed the lineup 'cause it was scheduled for the second day (day after dist day) as well. Go to part 1, Swimming Rules, page 29 for the schedule of linups based on course, http://www.usms.org/rules/
  • Anyone have any good photos from INDY?? I shot a few with my lame little broken down camera. Thanks for the pictures! Got any of the drunken orgies that followed? I helped score points for my team and got a bunch of great experience in a fantastic facility among talented swimmers. I would do it again for sure. From my perspective relay day was a brilliant idea. Perhaps there is a tension (not to be reconciled) between what makes a great championship meet for elite competitors and what grows participation in the event and creates more buy-in for Masters competition more broadly. This meet accomplished the latter for me. That might be the only rational way for me to participate. Thanks for posting your experience.

    1 Ross, Michael S 41 MESC 2:17.50 2:15.75 26.49 58.44 (31.95) 1:40.70 (42.26) 2:15.75 (35.05) Ouch - I can feel for a fellow Breaststroke disabled swimmer :badday:
  • All the more reason to finally do the seeding regardless of age group. Or at least give people the OPTION on the entry card >> "seeded Open" or "seeded by age group". Agreed ... with the exception of the distance events, that's one of the benefits of the regional meets versus Nationals
  • Agreed ... with the exception of the distance events, that's one of the benefits of the regional meets versus Nationals I have to say that I did feel more comfortable in merge events than age group heats. I was lucky to have a strong field in my 200 fly but what if the people in my heat were so close together.

Good point with the young guys ... All the more reason to finally do the seeding regardless of age group. Or at least give people the OPTION on the entry card >> "seeded Open" or "seeded by age group".
  • You drove to Indy, right? So you've probably got a day of driving to and from the meet. If you went to Clovis you'd have a day of flying on each end. In terms of travel time it's probably a wash. Correct. I drove Tuesday since I would be stiff for the 400 IM and I am leaving Tuesday because I do not want to drive home after the 1500. It was 10 hours from Philly. My teammate had 16 from Altantic City because it got stuck in traffic in Phillly and Pittsburgh.
  • Hey! Are you here in INDY? Cause if you were, you probably know - or would have seen that relay day is pretty darn fun - and a lot of swimmers enjoyed it! If relay day were located on the 1st or last day it would not be nearly as well attended as it was today. USA teams took back many World records - and several National records were set as well. I agree with the dilemma over the long distance events. Kind of like the idea of relays attached to a distance event too. But how can you plan a timeline when relay entries can't be submitted until the last minute? A day like that could go until late in the night. But I'm sure various committees would appreciate hearing our constructive suggestions for improving the National Championships if they serve all the membership. Sure is hard to please everyone... No I am not in Indy, because I could not take the time off of work to travel and swim 3 events and possibly a relay or 2. I AM glad that the relays were well attended. I understand that it is impossible to please everyone. BTW Ahelee...you had some great times from what I see in the results! Good luck with the rest of your swims!
