Melting goggle straps

I wear swedes, and every summer, my goggle straps turn sticky and fail at a much faster rate then the rest of the year. What do you do to deal with this? Replace your goggles monthly? Bungie replacement strap? Silicon replacement strap? Glue?
  • My goggles use to do that quite a bit, but maybe 2-3 years ago the strap started coming in a different material. I've worn TYR Racetech as long as I can remember....and in summer I wear the metallized lenses. The straps are now more plasticy. They still don't last as long as I'd like, but not like they used to be. I leave my swimming stuff in my car before or after I swim, nearly the whole day while I'm at work. I can't imagine carting it all into my office.

I use a beach blanket but I don't think that does the trick.
  • Don't leave them in the car to bake in the heat.
  • Bungees are the way to go. Also, wash and rins your goggles after every use.

In fact, the seal between the goggle & the soft eyepiece part (I'm not man enough for Swedes), the nose piece or the connecty-thing that allows you to adjust the straps all end up going before my straps do.

silicon, though it lasts longer will also break down (usually as you are about to step up on the blocks) bungees use a rubber elastic as well, but when it fails, the woven sheath will keep things together.

Don't leave them in the car to bake in the heat. :) My goggles last about 6-8 weeks in the summer, spending no time in the heat other than the trip to the pool.
  • I hate to recommend the evil corporate empire, but I find the Speedo GCR plus goggles to be incredibly long lasting. Even though I complained about nose pieces and strap clips busting, that's after well more than a year of use. I probably buy only 1 or 2 new pairs a year and then more because I'm just bored and want a new color.
  • In Chicagoland , my silicone straps last a long time . Maybe , just bring in the goggles to work daily?
  • Bungees are the way to go. Also, wash and rins your goggles after every use. Ditto on the bungees. I still have one that I purchased ten years ago, it works fine. As soon as I purchase goggles, I get a bungee strap. I also have six pairs that I rotate, depending upon when I train during the day. I have swum the last ten years in Arizona, if the bungees last a long time here they will last just about anywhere. Distilled water is your friend too...
