note agustin's 100 *** splits in prelims
guess he was playing around a little
5 Agustin Magrude Texas-ST
54.80 26.87 27.93
Wow, those are impressive splits. There are two local kids swimming the 100 br. One in the ACC swam a 54.08, but his splits were not so even. 25.15 and 28.93.
I'm excited about finals!!!
Why do they bother with the Big XII meet? It is like a Texas intrasquad meet, but slower. The lack of depth in certain events is mind-numbing even considering they have just 3 men's teams. Take a look at the men's 400IM. The first 2 swimmers were solid, but fourth in prelims is a 4:02 and 8th was almost a 4:28. The 8th place woman was under 4:18 in the Big XII. It is just a joke that a division I college team would even have a male 400IMer in the prime of his swimming career going a 4:27+ on their team (even walk-ons), much less that person can say they were in the finals at conference. There should be rules against this. The 100 *** wasn't much better.
The ACC is impressive.
I was looking at how many college swimmers have gone under 20 seconds in the 50 free on collegeswimming.com - I count 81 so far in DI and the conference meets are not complete. Plus, there are some in Div. II and III that have gone 19s prior to their national meets. There will probably be at least 100 college swimmers going under 20 seconds this year. When I was in college in the 80s it was amazing to see a sub-20 swim and now it is just pedestrian.
When will the first 40-plus year old masters swimmer break 20 seconds? After watching Dara this summer it certainly has to be considered possible at some point even though the current record seems to be a ways off at 20.95 by Paul Smith. Maybe Josh Davis in 5 years will get motivated to try for a 19.

Congratulation Rob! Actually, I guess the congratulations should go to your son. He is swimming well (and really fast!)! I am following a couple of local boys in the ACC, so it's very fun to keep up with!
I know it's straying off topic, but did you see the 500 results from the ACC? Holy crap, that's fast!

That is definitely moving. Where's this kid from prior to UVA? Is Bernadino still the coach there?
Wow, this is a pretty smokin' 200 free! Pretty impressive splits!

That Guy,
Thanks for the research...good stuff. Would it be possible for you to start a new thread with all these...:applaud:

That last link is not a realtime results page, but it's all I could find. It's a pretty funny read, actually.

Out in 46/1:36 in the 500? Incredible. Then again, he split 1:31 in the 800 FR, I guess 1:36 is just cruising.
UVa's 800 FR was awfully fast too, 6:15.0 for an average of 1:33.7. I remember being completely thunderstruck when Rowdy went 1:33 in college (back in 1981 I think)...now we have four guys averaging that fast.
ACCs are quick this year. A 23.2 50 *** split in the medley relay? Seven teams under 1:20 in the 200 FR...including DUKE, of all teams? One of the coaches at practice today said there were about 40 men who split 20.0 or better in relays. (I can't imagine how wavy that pool was!)
I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around these times.
and to bring the thread back on topic, :woot:
It does seem we hijacked Ande's thread...but it is kind of nice to have one place to talk about all the conference championships.
Maybe Ande could rename the thread...and since it was his to begin with, I'd even be willing to accept "2009 Championships of the Big 12 and lesser conferences" :)
Just looked at the ACC results for tonight...that 400 IM (3:39.33) by Gal Nevo was something else. A 1:00 split on the breaststroke leg? Sheesh. I remember when breaking the 4 minute barrier was a pretty big deal, now we have 23 guys doing it in the morning.
Kudos to Noah Copeland for his 200 free, he brought it back tough to medal in a competitive field:
