2009 USMS Short Course National Championships 5/7/2009 - 5/10/2009 Fresno, CA www.usms.org/.../scnats09 Are you going?
  • Allen, forgive me if this has come up here earlier, but what is your guestimate of the percentage of the medal-winning swimmers wearing B70s and LZRs vs. earlier generation suits? Anybody wearing the Jaked? Anybody set a national record yet without some kind of speed suit? Or win an event? Any scuttlebutt on B70s fate for LCM Nats?

Jim, unless you provide proof of ownership of some kind of tech suit, they don't even let you compete.:bolt: I haven't seen any Jakeds. I've seen a lot of B70s and LZRs, as well as FS-Pros, Renegades, Lattes, and others things. I have no idea of the percentage of winners in tech suits vs without. I don't know whether it differs from the percentage of the general population wearing some kind of suit (which is high). The Floswimming people are here (I met them both at lunch, they are nice but overworked) and I'm sure they will be posting lots of videos that you can analyze to your heart's content. Jazz Hands didn't wear a tech suit, but he "only" got 2nd in the 50. BTW, he is planning to swim the 500 tomorrow. Another aside: although we miss Mark Gill's announcing a lot, Rowdy has been doing quite a bit and he is great: very very enthusiastic. In fact, he is much better (IMO) at this meet than he was at the Olympics. His enthusiasm for masters swimming is pretty obvious. (And his 50 free was very pretty to watch, too.)
  • Chris, I can understand why a person like yourself, with the body of a Herculean Greek God-like Hominid, as evidenced by the photo spread in the recent issue of swimmer, would want to have body suits banned. This only means that tubs o' lard like me would serve as more effective foils to your corporal magnificence! Joking aside, that was a great article, and your coach's comments about your work ethic, though making the phrase OCD briefly cross my mind, nevertheless had as its main impact my personal desire to "be like Chris." Along these lines, I noticed in some of your pictures that your toes appear to be going in an impossible direction vis a vis the rest of your legs. This obviously gives your kicks an extra oomph. Would you be willing to divulge the name of the orthopedic surgeon you used to cut your ligaments and allow your feet to do this? Keep on your great swimming! Pay no attention to those ignoramuses who scoff at your hobbling progress on land. They probably laugh at walrus seals on the beach, too, the scoundrels!
  • I like that Ahelee Osborn mentioned her "virtual" coach, Ande, in the FloSwimming (sp) interview. This forum is an amazing resource! Now I want to know exactly what advice she followed, given her amazing swims. Please share specifics, Ahelee? Or your one best tip? For the 400 IM? Which you don't usually swim? Sheesh. A lot of amazing swims from lots of people who post on this board (duh, it's the masters bulletin board). But still. Very inspiring so far.

Mark and I were laughing about some shots like that; I think he made the comment that my foot looked broken. I had no idea they looked like that -- or, for that matter, that my knees were as bent as they appear in the photos. It would be interesting to compare similar shots to other swimmers of various kicking ability to see how much of a difference there is. I think underwater photography/videography is a very cool tool. My (very) flexible ankles are nothing I had to work for, completely God-given. I agree that they are the main reason for my ability to kick well. Too bad I didn't get larger feet (I'm a size 9.5) to go along with the ankles, but oh well!
  • Allen, Didn't mean to dis your swim. You can't do much better than your best time! It's all about how you feel about it and a win is a win no matter what! Hey, when I won the 100 free in Federal Way, it was only because Paul Trevisan didn't show up. A win is a win. There is no asterik (sp)! Good luck the rest of the meet.:)

I haven't seen anywhere near all the races, but I don't remember seeing any winner in anything but a B-70 or a LZR.I have also seen several swimmers in Xteras and some other wetsuit looking suit I don't recognize. No Jakeds though.
