  • Prana is the life force. It is roughly the same as Chi(Xi)
  • My 2009 swim goals: 1. To negotiate with coach an easier version of one set per practice 2. To complete warm-up without stopping to talk 3. To not be last person in the showers after practice 4. Qualifing for Nationals would be nice too
  • For 2009 I had not really thought about goals or resolutions. Since I started coaching this past fall my thoughts have been more about my swimmers than me. It was great seeing them make their qualifying times or setting new best times. As I sit here thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2009 with my swimming the first thing that came to mind was that I would like to break the 3:00.00 for my 200 Fly (SCY) provided my shoulders will hold up and a second goal is to break 6:00.00 in the 500 Free. I would also like to do my first open water swim this year.

  • .... Less caffeine and more prana will undoubtedly help me sleep and smile more. What is "prana"?
  • What is "prana"? To put it simply, yogic breathing.

I thought about my resolutions long and hard last year. I never achieved any of them in the past, so I just resolved to Be Resolute ahead of New Years. That's how I started swimming in November instead of this month, that's how I joined this forum in Dec '08 instead of Jan '09, that's how I joined Masters last month instead of this one, and that's how I made my goal of 200 pounds (lost 25 lbs since Nov) by the new year. Tomorrow or perhaps the day after I will officially be able to put a 1 before two 9s as my weight. :D I can no longer fit into my 38-waist pants which is why I've been stuck wearing an old pair of 36-jeans for days on end now. Judging by the fact that I still have a gut and a butt, one of my new resolutions is to slip comfortably into a 34-waist by the end of this month. If I have one resolution pertaining to swimming, it is this: swim faster faster. I rather like that little phrase. I'm still way too new to all this stuff to be very specific, but I'm pretty sure that when I come to decisions, I'll be able to sniff out all the right choices as pertains chasing that resolution. Oh, and always have fun.

I have to first note that it will be very hard for me to top my swim experiences in 2008. Though my training was not always consistent, and my rotator cuff caused me to resort to kick workouts only for 2 months, I had a great year. Meeting, swimming with, and laughing with the far flung members of Team Hottub at Austin SCY nationals will rank as one of the fun-nest things I have ever done. My swim goals remain process focused: train consistently, don't get injured, have fun and laugh often. Less caffeine and more prana will undoubtedly help me sleep and smile more. Alas, I'm not sure what I can count on for competition as my life is intruding.

I resolve not to start ironic threads about not getting the magazine on time...it was making fun of the previous complaint threads not the delivery service from USMS Magazine HQ.. :D

If I have one resolution pertaining to swimming, it is this: swim faster faster. You know what would be great? If someone took 3 or 4 years to compile a couple hundred tips that would help you swim faster faster. Maybe someone should resolve to do that?
