I will start with breastroke- Gary Marshall(25-29) 1:02 high in the hundred 2:16 in the 200, David Guthrie(45-49) 1:07 in the 100 2:27 in the 200 Robert Strand(60-64) 33.41 50 *** 1:15 100 ***. Between them 6 world records Marshall 1, Guthrie 2 and Strand 3. There are plenty more so add to the thread!!!!!
  • Chris Derks 16:32 in the 1500 to set a new WR for 35-39 (Rowdy Gaines had the old one). I think Jeff Erwin's 16:39 is at least as impressive: he is 6 years older than Derks, and he also set a WR. How about Noriko Inada: 29.15 in the 50 back, 1:02.83 in the 100 back. Both times would have won the men's events in her age group, the 100 by 4 seconds! In fact, if she were a man she would have had the 3rd fastest 100 OVERALL, finishing just 0.04 behind Jay Yarid. Her underwaters were pretty slick.

Maybe I should start thinking the same about Derks. He swam a sub-9:40 1000 in Austin, after all. Kawamoto swam a 51.71 at U.S. Open a couple weeks ago.
  • Any one above 80 swimming and completing any event gets my kudos!
  • Any one above 80 swimming and completing any event gets my kudos! I agree strongly; I myself am most motivated by the swimmers above 60. But when Doug Strong was swimming his 200 fly there were a number of snide remarks by swimmers sitting near me, to the effect that he shouldn't be swimming the race. The fact that he got DQ'd didn't help matters. (I do wish he had entered a more realistic time so they could have had several "swim through" heats scheduled, not just the one.) What was surprising to me is that the comments came from more elderly swimmers, not from impatient young pups.
  • Kind of funny how they were making the comments from the seats....while he was swimming the 200 Fly......I respect him for even trying for well over 10 MINUTES. At age EIGHTY THREE!!!! Phu-leeze, I'm 41 and I ain't swimming 2Fly LCM, SCY or even in a backyard pool. So he can swim what ever he wants. If not at USMS Nationals, then where?
  • for well over 10 MINUTES. At age EIGHTY THREE!!!! Ten minutes was his entered time but he swam for much longer than that, at least twenty. I couldn't imagine swimming 20 minutes of straight fly in a LCM pool at my present age, forget about 40 years from now. I was in the locker room later when he was changing and upset about being DQ'd (underwater recovery). I bet he's used the same stroke in meets before now...was he DQ'd in those? I've definitely seen little tykes with the same kind of stroke in summer league swimming, without them getting the boot.

  • Granted I didn't see the exact moment of the DQ, but I watched a lot of his swim and he looked to me to be really close to not getting his wrists out of the water.

Must have been the same guy that caused some controversy at Woodlands and the definition of arm recovery on butterfly. He was DQ'd on first length of 400 IM and they let him keep going for close to 16 minutes. A part of me thinks this is real cool to be swimming at that age, but a part also wishes for some to pick shorter events (especially as my mile was just kicking off after 9pm at Mt. Hood).:drown:

If he had put an accurate time and they had swum 2-3 more heats while he was churning away, it would not have delayed the meet. But such swims are part of Masters, for better or for worse.
