Dara looks smooth I thought she had lots more to give. Jessica seemed to be slapping water if she could smooth her stroke a little she could be faster. But don't count all the others out. It should be a great final.

Anyone notice Jessica Hardy's stroke in the 50 free? She's changed it. It looks much more windmill-y, more like Nystrand. She seemed to be the only one in the semi-finals that swam that way. She's got loads of raw speed. Same here. I thought of Nystrand immediately. The slow motion replay does a great job of breaking down the recovery. They were right in saying she should take up more freestyle. That girl is a natural sprinter.

I'm all for personality but Hall's isn't it for me. I don't think he deserves to even talk about being the Godfather of swimming. Overall with just tonight remaining - I think the trials have been disappointing. Maybe I succumbed to the hype. But I'm disappointed in the slow finals swims in particular. The LZR didn't produce a 2% drop. The swimmers at the top - who are at the peak of fitness, technical skill, etc. should show the clearest improvement from an equipment change. But maybe some are saving the bodyskin for Beijing? Up: Hoff, Phelps, Lochte, Lezak, Hoelzer, Beisel, Weber-Gale, Torres, Breeden, Peirsol, Stovall, Schmitt Down: Hansen, Sandeno, Crocker, Ziegler, Kirk, McGregory, KLJ, Walker, G. Hall, Komisarz, Klueh, Vollmer Neutral: Coughlin, Soni, Wildman-Tobriner, C. Jones Future: N. Adrian, Schmitt, Beisel, Hersey, Berens, Riefenstahl, Magnuson

The godfather of swimming thing was a cartoon IMHO. Wildman-Tobriner had a complete tendon tear in his shoulder December 2007. I would say he did incredibly well, considering the impact this placed on his training.
  • From watching the splits on omegatiming.com, looks like it was a great race. I guessed wrong who the piano would land on though

I've heard from more than one source that Hall swam a PB. Hall's PB was 21.76, his AR from 2000.
  • They could have showed the whole race. Who cares whether it was live or not. They probably don't do this in Australia when the 1500 comes on at the Olympics. Pathetic.
  • Poor Vendt. Oh well, he can just swim the preliminary relay of the 4 x 200 and have some fun in Beijing. He has done really well at these Trials. Maybe the 1500 is just too long of a race for him. He might be better suited for the 800. Of course, the guys don't swim the 800 at the Games. Go Vanderkaay. He better not scratch the 1500. He could be the one to take down Hackett. I can hope, can't I.

Sprinters are different. These antics are just his way of getting up. I almost wonder if they are a burden at this point: everyone expects something outlandish, it almost seems like it would be a distraction to have to come up with something. If he had not done anything, everyone would wonder what his problem was, if his heart was really in it. Still, didn't he do a PR? Not enough to make the team but a fine swim. I have to say, I agree with Rowdy that he should have trained for the 100 as well. Seemed to work for Dara... There were 7 other sprinters in that heat. None had capes. None claimed to be the Godfather of swimming. None pretended to shoot guns. Gary is simply Gary.

I believe two of his swims, 21.89 in the morning heat and 21.91 in the final are the fastest he's been in eight years.
