That's the question isn't it? Performance Enhancing Drugs don't enhance ones technique. They provide more power. I'm speaking out of my area of expertise, but from what I understand, the main advantage is that they help the body recuperate faster, which helps in training. I mentioned either here or in another thread that I swam w/ a couple of juiced guys. While the rest of us were beat -- especially after several days/weeks of intense training -- these guys could keep going and keep pushing themselves. They were able to focus on technique AND stamina, whereas the rest of us were more in survival mode: trying desperately to keep our stroke together while tired.

The technical components of a start is all about how you enter and exit the surface tension of the water, critical in a 50. You can increase your power output, but that is met by an equal increase in the resistance of the water. You don't go faster... A sprinter on the track is not impeded as much as a swimmer, because of the water. That is why training "range of motion", and technical analysis can produce larger "gains" in swimming.

I also remember the bashing Shirley Babashoff got when she openly spoke out against the East German cheaters. Surly Shirley is the title they hung around her neck and she was dead on target. That's why she's my hottest female Olympian.
  • Again!! To the delight of Australians and women everywhere, Eamon Sullivan has again bested his own record with an out-of-competition 50m swim of 10.8 seconds in which he barely skimmed the water, thus avoiding all those pesky questions about hand entry and arm recovery. When asked to what he attributed this amazing feat, Sullivan replied, "Aw, shucks; my coach told me I could swim faster, so I did." Further, he produced this new world record in jammers rather than the LZR suit, thus precipitating hurried conferences at Speedo's HQ. On hearing the news, AFP reports, Alain Bernard repaired to the weight room and threw kettle bells for 10 hours. ;) Have a good day in the pool, everybody! The saga continues! Regards, VB
  • Hi George! See 2 posts above; Eamon did it first and bestest. I do like the "Oh, Canada!" note, though. Regards, VB Brendan Hayden breaks the 50m WR 20.98 seconds, first Man to get under 21 seconds. His statement after his record setting heat in the 50 he sang Oh Canada :canada::canada::canada: He remembered that Marilyn Bell sang Oh Canada when she swam accross Lake Ontario. Does any one know that today is April 1st and the what that means???
  • I'm sure your instincts are dead on, just as they were back in 2005 on another thread: Thanks. I enjoyed that, Gull.

If Gary Hall really believes he cannot go 21.2 then he is probably right. But most assuredly there are scores of young men who believe they can become the worlds fastest swimmer, so eventually and Sullivans new record will be surpassed by someone who believes he can.

I think we need to have a talk to Gary.. All this talk about drag and force means nothing, you have to swim from your gut. I was in a 15 mile race, the water was very cold the wind was very heavy. I was ready to give up sitting in 7th place. My friend Mike was on the feeding barge he came over to me and said "George were is the spirit you had when you beat Clarke Scholes. Show them you can do it." I did I won the race.

What we think we see is not always what we do see. In 1956 at the Olympics I saw all of the Jappanes swimmers with what I thought injection marks on there backs. Their backs had many needle marks on them. I thought what kind of drugs are they using. I asked one of their swimmers what the drug was. He said in his limited English "No drugs, it called accupuncture.
