I managed to break my toe this weekend and honest to god, as I was sitting on the stairs, in the dark,
cursing :rant3:whatever I had tripped over, all I could think of was -how am I going to swim?
I did this 2 years ago(kicked the stupid ladder on the side of the pool-while trying to make room for another swimmer-
and caught my little toe) and I had to stop swimming for a couple of weeks.:toohurt:
Is there something I can tape my toes with that won't come off when wet?
Oh, I hate it when stupid stuff like that happens.
As for taping, you could try to use leukotape (see the link below):

I doubt you'd be able to get this stuff at a Walgreens, but if you know a PT they might have it in your office. I use this on my knees and it will last through about 45 min to an hour in the water and that is even with a lot of flexing and pulling on the tape occurring at the turns. I bet in a fairly immobile use such as taping one toe to another that it would really stay on in the water.
The brown tape is the really, truly sticky stuff. You are supposed to use the white cover tape underneath the brown tape, but if your skin is really tough or you just don't care that you pull the skin off along with the tape...
Good luck and I hope your toe heals fast.

Wear tight shoes.
I have seen people tape their toes together and spray with a sealing spray and swim. I have had broken toes, fingers, an ankle and have kept swimming using tapes and bandages. But follow your doctors orders.

Go to the drugstore and buy some waterproof bandages and/or tape. I shredded a piece off my toe last year (on the ladder) and had to tape it for a few weeks to keep it from flopping around. I tried all the different types of waterproof bandages, but the stuff that worked the best was the good old fashioned white sticky tape that the lifeguards had. You should be able to use that to tape your toes together. It's the kind that comes in a round metal tin.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I'll give them a try tomorrow....

Well, I got in the pool this morning with my purple toe nicely taped up.
Tape lasted about 3 laps and then fell off, so I gave it a shot without since it was pretty numb and puffy.
I was able to swim my *** stroke with very little pain.
The only thing that worried me was the turn and pushing off the wall.
I'm crossing my fingers that this will be my only injury for this year..:toohurt:

You must have used the wrong tape, not sticky enough. It should also be applied at home with very dry feet. I would also wash the foot with rubbing alcohol to remove foot oils be fore taping.
You can find waterproof athletic tape at most major sporting goods stores.

I know the feeling...about 12 years ago I had the tip of my middle finger chopped off while checking the tension on a truck's alternator belt. I remember standing there in the afternoon sun, watching the blood from my finger squirt rhythmically onto the dusty concrete, thinking..."Damn, this a tad bothersome! Now I am going to have to make a trip into town and it will be at least five o'clock before I am going to be able to transplant my brocolli seedlings. And I'll have to put a plastic bag over my hand..."
I didn't transplant them myself. A friend helped me out but I was back in my beloved garden within the week and by the second week I could knead and bake an entire loaf of bread with my left hand.
So I guess you will find a way to make it work. It sounds like you really love your swimming.

Try a quality vinyl electrical tape, like Scotch 33+. It sticks well and stretches a bit so you can get a good fit.
It worked for me a couple of years ago when I smashed a finger. Swimming with the nail flapping was not pleasant, so I'd tape my finger tip prior swimming till the nail fell off. The tape never fell off during an hour or so swim.

I broke my toe in Jan and tried lots of tapes - the one that worked the best was the J&J Waterproof tape. But don't just tape your toes together. Take a separate long piece of tape and wrap it over the toe tape and around your foot a couple of times. That worked for me for about an hour.
