Hello to everyone,
This is my first post on this board so here's a quick intro before my question.
Stats: Male/33/6'/175lbs/Toronto, ON area. I am new to Masters swimming/training, (4 months) but not new to the water. Lifeguard, SCUBA/freediver, more at home in the water than out, should have been a swimmer but somehow got involved with bodybuilding - the last sport on Earth I have genetics for, but I did 16 years in the gym when I shoulda been in the pool.
Now I have found Masters - better late than never. I have been swimming for about 4 months now and LOVE it! I was made for this sport in every way, shape, and form.
My first question is pretty basic, concerning goggles. I have Speedo AirSeal's and they are great - however they leave marks around my eyes for up to 6+ hours after swimming. I look ridiculous. If I loosen them they leak, especially pushing off the wall, ie: *** pullout.
Any ideas/tips/suggestions?? Should I shop around for a different pair? They seem to fit/work fine except for the marks. Is this just part of the sport? (No one else seems to have marks as crazy as mine though...)
Glad to be a part of this forum and Masters Swimming. I know little about swimming (but learning very fast) and my forte is weight training and nutrition if anyone has questions about those areas.
I found the recent thread about slimming down to swim faster very interesting. I plan to keep hitting the weights 3X/week and even compete in fitness modeling as I jump into Masters swimming, but do not plan to add any more muscle, unless the swim training adds some. I don't think it will.
Planning to learn as much about swimming as I do about weight training & bodybuilding. This is my sport!
Swim Fast!

Yes, shop around for a different pair, and try to find a shop where they let you try them on. There are many different models out there for different shapes and sizes of faces. You shouldn't have to crank them super-tight if they are a good fit.
If you are swimming first thing in the morning, splash cold water on your face before leaving for the pool. Waking up with a slightly puffy face can make your goggles leave marks as well.
I like the Speedo Vanquisher's. I can keep them pretty loose and they keep a great seal and leave no marks when loose. I tighten them up when swimming in a meet.
I believe the Air Seals come with three different nose pieces. You might want to swap them around to see if you get a better leak proof fit before you chuck them.
Go buy some cheap Swedish goggles, they never leak. And, I'm sure some geezer on the forum will start advocating the Compys from the 1930s any second now.
Old geezer chiming in...swedish goggles are a great idea:doh: since they have no padding and will probably make more of mark on your face. Seriously, everything makes a mark at my age (loss of collagen, etc.). Maybe aquageek can recommend some good moisturizer for me. :D

I have marks for several hours after I swim. I swim at lunch and don't have to worry about puffy eyes like morning swimmers and my goggles fit pretty well. I have had good luck with a good lotion for my face. It seems that the goggle marks fade more quickly when I put on lotion after I swim.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I swim mid-day or in the evening, and I do use moisturizer after swimming.
I will try the different nose pieces that come with the Air Seals, and look into trying the Vanquisher's as well.
after you swim and shower....
take a wash cloth
soak it in ice cold water
press on your face for a couple of min.
repeat
don't ask me how it works, but it does for me
could be that it reduces the swelling?:dunno:
Here's my :2cents: about the goggles:
I use the speedo "sprint" version and they seem to fit my face pretty good. I like them because they're cheap. They leave a slight ring around my right eye but it goes away after about 20 minutes. Definitely try different types as everyone's face is unique. Good luck.
2fish&1whale,
Thanks, the marks seem to be definitely less noticable when I swim in the cooler of the two pools I train in. Both 25m SC, one is 81-82F, the other is 87-88F. (I don't mind the warmer water and actually prefer it this time of year. I live in Ontario and it has been a long, cold, brutal winter....)
I made a new post in the Open Water swimming forum with more info and my plans for this summer. Looking to meet others for discussion, etc. who are also into OWS. I recently found out about all these OW events and they look awesome!! I think this just might be my niche in Masters swimming.
Help! Most of these answers to the goggle dilemma appear to be very o ld. I also am very frustrated with my goggles. All of them leak. Then when I try to adjust them, I spend half of my lap swimming time trying to adjust them. My dream would be to find some leak proof goggles that are easy to adjust to start with and never have to adjust again. HELP>
