Flip turn in free style

How close should you go to the wall for a flip turn in free style?? For me it depends on how strong my pull is, I would just experiment until i find a distance that gives me a good turn.

I don't have any idea what the current teachings are, but my personal experience is that my best turns come when my knees are bent just a little more than 90 degrees as my feet hit the wall.

Experiment by jumping off the ground while on dry land. Perhaps you'll find that you get the most power if your feet are a little wider than shoulder width apart. You'll also be able to tell what feels right for you. Bend your knees completely and see how that feels. Bend them only slightly and check that out. Choose something in the middle. There may be a more scientific answer out there, but this has worked for me.

Seems like a good exercise would be to push off underwater using various amounts of knee bend and noting how far you can glide. Everything else being equal, if you get the same result with two varying amounts of knee bend, the straighter leg would have the advantage of starting the turn sooner.
  • Keep in mind that you should have momentum coming into the wall, so what may be too far when you start your turn may be just right by the time you are ready to push off.
