Here's a thread for the ladies to discuss anything that relates to women and swimming. For example, feel free to discuss how disgustingly ugly fastskins are, how the "curse" can kill a meet, how suits don't fit, how swimming wrecks your hair, how hormones unhinge you, etc.
I had something kick my butt last week. Started with pink eye and by the end of the day I was achy, feverish, and sore throat. The next day I was in bed all day except to throw up. I'm still coughing and it's been 10 days. I don't think this was/is a flu but it sucks, whatever it is.
It's luck of the draw which virus they choose for the yearly strain and whether it's the one that actually shows up.
The vaccine is reformulated every year, but it is effective. It actually vaccinates against three strains, not just one. Everyone should get a flu shot, in my opinion. Why not, really?

What people call "stomach flu" is not the same thing as "influenza", which is what the vaccine is for. According to the below article, it's rare for influenza to be accompanied by vomiting...
From: coldflu.about.com/.../stomachflu.htm
People often get confused about the differences between the flu, or influenza, and the stomach flu. These are actually two completely different, and unrelated, illnesses. The true flu is caused by the influenza virus and causes mostly upper respiratory problems. The "stomach flu" can be caused by a number of viruses and causes gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea and vomiting. A breakdown of the symptoms of these two different illnesses follows.
Answer:
When your doctor talks about the flu, he is referring to influenza, or the seasonal flu. It is characterized by:
* Cough
* Congestion
* Aches and pains
* Fever
* Exhaustion
The "stomach flu" is a completely different virus and is characterized by:
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Stomach pain and cramping
* Occasionally fever
People with influenza will sometimes have vomiting and diarrhea, but these symptoms are rare.

I've got something similar to this right now. Not as bad but my eye was burning and red and I was achy, fatigued and sore throat. I'm better today so I came in to work (no pool this morning though). Good thing too because a lot of people are out sick today!
The scene: Our women's locker room, 7:00pm. The top-level ("elite") age group swimmers have finished their evening workout and are getting dressed....
Female swimmer: "I can't believe I'm so hungry. And I even ate today!"
Assistant coach: "What did you have to eat?"
Female swimmer: "Some Oreos."
Just twisted and wrong. :shakeshead:
My kids, in contrast, are eating me out of house and home.

So are mine. And sometimes they bring 3 or 4 of their friends with them at lunch time too. It's like a horde of locusts went through the pantry after they leave to go back to school.

1. Is everyone wearing their wedding/engagement ring(s) during practice or meets?
I don't usually wear my jewelry in the pool. My "wedding" ring and another ring I wear regularly are cheap silver and would turn black. I have a third ring that is yellow gold with a small collection of stones in a setting, and I wear that in the pool sometimes if I can't get it off my finger. (The knuckle it has to go over is bigger than it used to be.) So far, no damage. I see a lot of simple gold bands in the pool, though.
I never take my wedding ring off (not even when inspecting vessels at the refinery), but it is just a plain gold band. I specifically got a plain gold band so I could leave it on all the time. I never wear my engagement ring in the pool.
I have a pair of small diamond stud earrings that I wore once to practice by accident. At the end of the practice, someone said, "wow, your earring is falling out!" The backs on both earrings had disappeared (bottom of pool, probably?) These are the screw-on kind of backs... like the earring is threaded... so I'm guessing the pool chemicals ate through them somehow. Fortunately, the earrings were still in my ears and unharmed. I got new backs and was good to go. Ever since then, I doublecheck that all jewelry is removed (aside from the wedding band.)
Sorry, can't help you with the other questions, Fort!
